Christie Appoints First Openly-Gay NJ Supreme Court Justice

Governor Chris Christie threw his left-wing critics for a loop today by nominating Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce A. Harris and Exeuctuve Assistant Attorney General Philip Kwon to the New Jersey Supreme Court.

What makes these nominations special or different?

Kwon would be the first Asian American on the state’s highest court. Cool. But Harris would be the third African American and, most interestingly for political watchers, the first openly gay New Jersey Supreme Court justice.

The Governor did, however, reaffirm his opposition to gay marriage at this morning press conference announcing the nominations. A bill is currently making its way through the legislature. Still, Chris Christie is not above surprising even his closest friends and advisors. One wonders what future-Justice Harris’s opinion is on the topic?
