Why Should Newt Drop Out?

A quick GOP primary recap by the numbers, Save Jerseyans:

Heading into last night, Rick Santorum needed 65% to 70% of all remaining delegates to clinch the nomination before Tampa.

Mitt Romney needed approximately 47%.

Alabama, Mississippi, Hawaii and American Somoa jointly awarded about 105 delegates last night (some are still outstanding pending further calculations by state officials). As of right now, Mitt won 41 delegates or 39% of the total loot. Santorum actually walked away with less: 37 delegates, or 35%.

How can it be any clearer, Save Jerseyans?

Santorum and Newt CANNOT win the nomination outright (i.e. before Tampa) unless Mitt Romney drops out. Period. End of sentence! Santorum’s not even on the ballot in winner-take-all D.C., and failed to make the ballot in four of Illinois’s eighteen congressional districts. He’s also likely to lose winner-take-all contests in blue state Delaware, Mormon Utah, and Chris Christie’s New Jersey. Even some potentially large favorable states like Texas are proportional; as last night showed, raw vote wins mean little under this goofy new RNC system. Finally, Santorum’s opportunity to “steal” delegates is also closing fast. Only about 500 or so outstanding delegates are unbound.

In short, Rick Santorum is quickly running out of places to make up ground and cut into Mitt’s sizable delegate lead.

However, the anti-Romney duo can deny Mitt a pre-Tampa coronation. That means we’re almost certain to have a brokered convention if the current trends continue. And at a brokered convention ANYTHING can happen, folks. Santorum’s chances of emerging victorious aren’t any better than Newt’s at that point; we may even see a Rubio, Ryan or even Mitch Daniels floor surge in the event of a deadlock. Currently, Mitt still has more delegates than all three opponents combined. It’s therefore much more likely that Ron Paul could pair up with Romney than Santorum forge a viable rebel alliance to secure the nomination.

So why are Santorum supporters so keen to get Gingrich out of the race?

With or without him, you’re going to have to win it at the convention. Numbers don’t lie!
