Let’s Hold Fat People AND Elected Officials to the Same Standard

Liberals want to control America's soda consumption. Why don't we control government's revenue consumption, too?

New York City’s Michael Bloomberg is making national headlines this week for vowing to ban sodas over 16 ounces from Gotham’s eateries, cafes and vending carts.

This is liberalism at its worst, Save Jerseyans. And least delicious.

The looney Left doesn’t typically subscribe to “natural law” or organized religion as an organizing principle for society, but adherents nevertheless believe it’s their naturally-ordained duty to decide what the “common good” looks like. Having done so, they callously proceed to impose their life choices on fellow citizens. After all, THEY know what’s best for everyone else! Liberals simply don’t trust informed individuals in a free market to make positive decisions. In their eyes, healthy life choices should be mandatory

It matters not whether said aims be well-intentioned (like limiting children’s sugar consumption) or ideologically fringe (e.g. controlling population growth by mandating contraceptive health coverage). They’re all to be accomplished by bayonet!

So it begs the question, Save Jerseyans: if we’re going to tell fat people how much soda they can drink for their own good, then why can’t we tell legislators/congressmen how much spending is too much?

The State House in Trenton, New Jersey.

Bloomberg wants to limit fatties to 16 oz of soda. So why shouldn’t we limit, for example, New Jersey’s state government to $16 billion per operating budgetary cycle? Instead, Bloomberg’s neighbors across the Hudson are debating whether we have enough revenue to sustain a $32.1 billion monstrosity? At least our Governor acknowledges the taxpayers’ right to have some of it back. It is our money! Yet his Democrat antagonists are really, truly worried it’s not enough.

And no one is talking about dissolving departments or laying off state workers at a time when the United States economy is clearly headed back down into the rabbit hole (ICYMI today: our national GDP growth has been revised downward to 1.9% for the 1st Q).

Well you know what, Save Jerseyans? Trenton is fat enough already and still putting on weight. Washington is obviously leading by example. Here at home, we recently capped property tax increases at 2.0% annually. Why in God’s name is it okay for state spending to have increased 6.0% in the last budget?

I say what’s good for the chubby goose should be okay for the equally fat gander. America has a calories problem AND a spending problem.

If Republicans are serious about saving this state and this country, then they’ll shove Bloomberg’s soda/spending contradiction in liberal politicians’ faces for all to see and, for once if our lifetimes, begin to impose a higher standard of responsibility on government than government capriciously imposes on its people.

  1. Christie has really, really let me down on the budget. I thought he had it in his mind to make big cuts.

  2. Wait a second here Matt!!! Looney left??? The Mayor was a republican before he became an independent…don't blame this one on us. And don't start on that "imposing their rules" BS on people…no one does that better than republicans. ie: YOUR definition of how long we have to use a freakin' gift card for cripes sake before you confiscate it!! YOUR definition of marriage and not allowing people to marry whom they want. I could go on, but you get the picture. And, by the way, this is just one more stupid idea from a well meaning politician…isn't the first and won't be the last.

  3. Why does it matter which party? A liberal is a liberal is a liberal no matter where they call home!

  4. After those big cuts happen the police, fireman, EMT, jail guards, road maintenance are cut to the bare minimum who are you going to call for services the Governor ?
