Jersey Justice Suffers While Trenton Partisans Blunder

Senator Oroho

A cornerstone of any free society is access to courts of law.

In New Jersey? Our politicians aren’t making it easy, Save Jerseyans. The ongoing judicial cold war between Governor Chris Christie and Democrat Senators exercising “senatorial courtesy” extends well beyond recent state supreme court confirmation battles. Dozens of state trial-level positions are going unfilled; that means longer wait times for litigants looking for justice. Much longer.

Senator Steven Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) took advantage of Monday’s bipartisan vote in support of a judicial pension constitutional amendment to resurrect the judicial appointment issue:

It is also commendable and notable how expeditiously the Senate moved SCR-110 following last week’s decision. I see no reason, then, why the majority party cannot take similarly swift action on other obvious necessities, such as filling court vacancies.”

New Jersey’s 3rd most populous county is a prime example, where state Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Essex) is single-handidly denying a day in court to hundreds of litigants and their families.

Matrimonial and “complex” civil trials — about 15% of Essex County Superior Court’s docket — have been on hold for months (since December 2011). Chief Justice Rabner recently transferred three additional judges to the vicinage, so matrimonial trial are expected to resume this September. Essex is still down 10 judges and the backlog has already swelled to nightmarish proportions.

Other counties are having similar troubles; Burlington County just got a little relief following the assignment of former New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow. She’s from Essex, but Rice and former Governor Dick Codey forced Christie to renominate Dow in GOP-dominated Burlco.

Justice isn’t a game, Save Jerseyans. Or at least it shouldn’t be. Someone should tell the Trenton Democrats!
