Romney Already Disqualified Condi

Condi Rice

Back in 2008, Save Jerseyans, Dr. Condoleezza Rice told a Washington Times interviewer that “I myself am someone who believes strongly in parental notification. […] I’m against late-term abortion, which is, I think, really very cruel.” Not very controversial, right?

The catch? She added “I have not wanted to see the law changed because it’s an area that I worry about the government being involved in.” In other words, she supports leaving Roe v. Wade alone. She went on to describe herself as “mildly pro-choice.”

Not a very intellectually coherent position for an otherwise uber-intelligent woman! So I guess, contrary to circulated reports, she’s not too adverse to politicking after all. That’s an amazingly political answer for lack of substance.

And in my opinion, this alone will disqualify her as a viable veep choice for Mitt Romney. Mitt’s stated 2012 position is in direct conflict with Dr. Rice’s sentiments. The Governor’s eight paragraph abortion position is laid out on the “values” page of his website.

Mitt believes that life begins at conception and wishes that the laws of our nation reflected that view. But while the nation remains so divided, he believes that the right next step is for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade – a case of blatant judicial activism that took a decision that should be left to the people and placed it in the hands of unelected judges. With Roe overturned, states will be empowered through the democratic process to determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate.

Moreover, in September 2011, Mitt told a Susan B. Anthony gathering that his running mate would be someone who shared these pro-life views (h/t TPM):

Moderator: Gov. Romney, will the person you chose as your vice presidential running mate be someone who shares your pro-life and pro-marriage convictions?

Romney: I certainly imagine so, I haven’t made and selections in that regard … [as I look around at the people I would consider] I would expect that they would all be pro-life and pro-traditional marriage … but this is an important enough issue that the person that I would select in that position would share my views on those important issues.

Host: So more than just expectation — would share those views?

Romney: Yes … that person would share my views, yeah.

Could Mitt Romney afford to reverse himself on THIS issue? And risk losing the all-important evangelical vote (a bloc that’s already lukewarm on his candidacy)?

I highly doubt it, Save Jerseyans.
