Who Are the 94 Million?

History will show that President Barack Obama was re-elected with a little more than 62 million votes or 51%. Governor Mitt Romney received almost 59 million votes or 48% of the electorate.

But who really won the 2012 presidential election? Weighing in with 94 million votes was – drum roll, please – none of the above.

Yes, that’s right. In the just concluded general election, 94 million American voters elected to stay home and not cast a ballot.

Sound incomprehensible? Yeah, to me too. I mean, how can you care so little about your country and its future – let alone the future of your children and grandchildren? What was so pressing that you couldn’t find the time to vote by absentee ballot, via early voting or to take a few minutes on Election Day to go to the polls?

We just celebrated Veterans Day, a holiday set aside to honor those men and women who served in our nation’s Armed Forces. Some of them came home and some of them did not. Some of them are still there.

But we dishonor their sacrifice as well as their memory when we choose not to participate in the democratic process.
