Divide and Conquer? Christie Poised to Receive Major Labor Endorsement

I don’t always agree with Governor Chris Christie’s positions, Save Jerseyans. And I suspect he couldn’t care less! He is his own man.

Notably, I was very disappointed to see widespread Republican support for November ballot question #1, a massive Big Labor stimulus package which will generate work for union members but result in an equally massive new liability for taxpayers with zero tangible benefit to our state’s economy.

For now, however, the move is paying dividends for the Big Guy’s nascent reelect effort.

Christie will join the Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) tomorrow afternoon to reportedly receive the organization’s endorsement at the Laborers Local 472 Training Center in Cliffwood, New Jersey around Noon.

This particular union has a history of independent endorsements; they supported Christie Whitman over Jim McGreevey in ’97 and, more recently, Kathe Donovan over Dennis McNerney in ’10. They did go with Corzine in ’09, so Tuesday’s nod will be a gain for the Guv.

Divide and conquer is a hallmark of the Christie Administration’s political strategy. He’s done a great job of pitting Democrats against each other on key issues… including two of his primary potential challengers. It’ll be interesting to see where else Christie’s team can siphon off traditional Dem support ahead of next fall. For example, the Administration has put a ton of effort into Hispanic outreach, and there’s anecdotal evidence that it may be bearing some fruit. Time tells all tales. I sure hope it’s worth it!
