Stage is Set for LD2 Showdown Between A.C. Sheriff and Incumbent Senator

We told you on Monday that Atlantic County Sheriff Frank Balles would announce a challenge to state Senator Jim Whelan (D) any day now, Save Jerseyans.

This morning Balles finally set a date, announcing that he would make a “major announcement regarding is future as an elected official” next Monday, February 11th.

The announcement is set to take place at 3:30 p.m. at Gary’s Restaurant in heavily Democratic Pleasantville where Balles formally served as a police captain. Incumbent GOP Assemblymen John Amodeo and Chris Brown will be by his side.

LD2 has been an elusive prize for Republicans in recent cycles ever since Jim Whelan took the traditionally GOP seat in 2007. The Atlantic County GOP is hopeful that Governor Chris Christie’s coattails and Balles’s proven track record campaigning and beating incumbents countywide (notably 5-term Democrat Sheriff Jim McGettigan by a 10-point margin in 2008) will make the difference this fall. Either way, race-watchers expect the LD2 contest to be among this cycle’s most competitive.
