Menendez Spikes Thatcher Resolution?

REPORT: Embattled New Jersey Senator Allegedly Holding Up Senate Resolution Honoring Iron Lady

Reid and Menendez PresserMultiple sources are reporting that Senator Bob Menendez (D-Dominican Republic) is holding up a vote on a resolution honoring the late Margaret Thatcher; he is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

A report from The Hill suggests the fight is ideological. Apparently, the GOP and Menendez’s committee can’t agree on the language. It doesn’t take much imagination to predict the possible points of contention. To be fair, Menendez did issue a gracious statement following her passing:

Margaret Thatcher was a dynamic force as an ally to the United States in winning the cold War and overcoming the despotism and repression suffered by hundreds of millions at the hands of Soviet communism. She was a persuasive, transformative leader who shaped world events with the power of her personality. A grocer’s daughter, she was known, affectionately and deservedly as “The Iron Lady. Margaret Thatcher’s life and legacy of leadership will endure for many generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and with the people of Great Britain and the world as we mourn her passing.”

Admirable though those sentiments might be, Save Jerseyans, this story is yet another sad example of why The New York Times called for Harry Reid to take away his gavel.

Menendez wasn’t an effective leader before the Dominican Republic/travel/donor-related scandals began breaking late last year. The situation clearly hasn’t improved, to the point where he can’t even build sufficient consensus for a simple resolution honoring one of our country’s greatest allies. Pretty pathetic! And more than a little embarrassing for our great nation.

  1. Jeremy theoretically this should have taken no more than 5 minutes. And honorary resolutions are daily occurrences.
