Which Jersey Shore Beaches are Open?

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

It’s easy enough to figure out, Save Jerseyans.

Call your favorite Jersey Shore town’s municipal hall, tourism division or lifeguard HQ. Check to see if they have an active FB page. Or, if you’re so inclined, The New York Times launched a pretty cool interactive map last week that indicates, town-by-town, whether your favorite Jersey Shore resort’s beaches are “open for business” over the Memorial Day Weekend holiday. A few beaches still aren’t ready post-Sandy but, despite those very few exceptions, the vast majority of New Jersey’s sands will accommodate tourists as they always have in years past.

Excitement is building at both ends of the G.S. Parkway despite a sour weather forecast. For many weeks now, Governor Christie and Lt. Governor Guadagno have been touring Shore points to raise awareness; the Big Guy appeared on NBC’s Today Show on Friday morning to formally reopen the rebuilt Seaside Heights Boardwalk:

Your Blogger-in-Chief will naturally be at the Shore this weekend, too…

I’ll try to check in with some sights, sounds, and reflections (in between burgers and bocce ball games). And I’m going to enjoy friends, fun, the Boss, BBQ, and sand (but unfortunately little sun) as much as the next Jersey guy this Memorial Day Weekend. I’m thrilled to be back at the beach for an extended post-Sandy stay.

But please don’t forget to set aside a moment this weekend, however brief, to remember the ultimate sacrifice of American soldiers from the Revolution up through the present day in Afghanistan.

Recent headlines remind us how fragile our American experiment truly is after 237 years, particularly when that experiment is entrusted to less-than-worthy leadership. Better days still lie ahead if we stay true to the principles (and heroes) who got us through the first 236 years. May God bless America, the brave men and women who’ve made it possible, and all of you, too, as we all prepare for a safe and joyous holiday weekend!
