Christie Supplants Reagan

The Faith and Freedom Coalition conference held its annual meeting last week, Save Jerseyans, and Chris Christie had nothing to do with it. But he was invited, so as has been the custom for any GOP event anywhere in America after February’s CPAC snub, the mainstream media was jonesing to see if the Governor’s absence had caused a rift:

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is less impressed than Ralph Reed by Christie’s conservative credentials. He told Politico last week that “the fact that he didn’t appoint somebody for a two-year period, and he set up a different election for three weeks before that’s going to cost $25 million, I think some people will say that doesn’t seem to be very conservative.” The libertarian hero is referring, of course, to the controversial cost of New Jersey’s upcoming special election. Whether Paul would be equally offended by Christie’s decision were he not likely to face Christie in the 2016 GOP presidential primary is unknowable but fun to think about…

The only certainty is that every Republican with a profile is now expected to take a position on Chris Christie’s value/legitimacy/effectiveness as a GOP leader. I’m sure he’s flattered; up until October 2012, Ronald Reagan was the preferred barometer.
