Two Working Menendez Theories

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-Hudson)The NY Post was out this morning with fresh allegations lodged against New Jersey’s senior U.S. Senator, Bob Menendez. You can click here to read’em yourself at their website. This latest story has all the requisite elements of a Washington scandal: the powerful man, the married woman, and the “ethical” implications.

I know; I hear you. You’re saying “again???” and wondering what to believe. I’ve got two working theories about New Jersey’s scandal-plagued congressman, Save Jerseyans:

(1) Manure attracts flies, Save Jerseyans. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Pick your favorite! They all mean the same thing. Generally, when many people are alleging that you’ve got a dark side over an extended period of time, then chances are that there’s at least something behind it all. Menendez has been in the news for years owing to one purported misstep or another. Who knows if the most recent allegations hold water? What can be said of a man who attracts this type of negative attention to his state on a consistent basis? You never heard this kind of stuff about Bill Bradley or Frank Lautenberg…

(2) And then there’s the conspiracy theory. You all know I’d be the last one to defend this creep but still, while the concerns regarding the financing for Menendez’s flights to the Dominican Republic appear substantial, it now appears that the prostitution allegations may’ve been fabricated according to the authorities. Does someone have it out for Menendez? It is awfully odd that all of this stuff is coming to the surface right around the time that he ascended to the chairmanship of the foreign relations committee. I’m not saying he’s a good guy. I’m not dismissing all of the claims published by major publications outright. I am saying that each allegation needs to be viewed with extreme scrutiny since the prostitution allegations apparently fell through in spectacular fashion.

So what’s the truth?

The one thing I’m sure about is that we’re likely to find out between now and when Hudson Bob’s up for reelection again in 2018. Whether New Jersey’s voters give a damn is another consideration altogether, and one that I’m decidedly less optimistic about.

  1. The NY Post? The same rag that came out with all the false stories after the Boston Marathon bombings and plastered the wrong picture of alleged suspects and is now being sued by those individuals.
