Meet William Gonzalez

2013 Meet the Candidates Series Continues for Week of August 4th

By Nicole Sanders | The Save Jersey Blog

Bill GonzalezIn my efforts to introduce candidates to the voting public, I started a weekly column called Meet the Candidates. It’s a past day stump speech updated for the virtual world.

Last week, I introduced you to Tom Sheppard who is running for Freeholder in Cumberland County and this week I am honored to introduce you to his running mate, William Gonzalez.

Mr. Gonzalez is a life-long resident of Vineland where he entered the United States Marine Corps Reserve right after graduating high school. He is also a former police officer, investigator for the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and member of the 2012 transition team for the Republican Elect Board of Chosen Freeholders in Cumberland County. He currently serves as Governor Chris Christie’s Hispanic Campaign Director for Cumberland County.

My interview with Cumberland County Freeholder Candidate William Gonzalez is below the fold…

Sanders: Recently Democratic Freeholder William F. Whelan resigned from the Cumberland County Board of Freeholders because it was alleged that his wife was operating an unlicensed child care operation in their home. What’s your take on this allegation and the alleged corruption in Cumberland County generally?

Gonzalez: I am of the opinion that a candidate’s personal life should not be part of a campaign. However corruption should not ever be tolerated in government or in any aspect of life.  Ignorance of laws is not an excuse.

Sanders: The last budget passed by the Freeholder Board included a 3% tax increase. Do you believe the increase was necessary? Why or why not?

Gonzalez: I do not believe that the increase was necessary. I am not a proponent of tax increases. I believe we need to exercise extreme caution in spending. Clearly the Democrats have seen the need to spend spend spend. We have certain needs that need to be addressed like our outdated 9-1-1 Center and Communications System. However new projects, when our economy is not doing well and our citizens are struggling to make a living, is irresponsible government. The residents of Cumberland County deserve to be the priority not political motivations.

Sanders: What makes you a better candidate in comparison to your challengers?

Gonzalez: Our challengers have clearly already begun to tow a party line on projects and the lack of open government. I will work for the people and believe in an open process of government where the entire community is fully briefed on every penny spent and every action taken.

Sanders: What are your greatest legislative or personal accomplishments thus far?

Gonzalez: My greatest personal accomplishment is and continues to be providing a safe environment for my children and providing them with the ability to grow in formal education and to grow as young adults.

I have been in public service my entire adult life. I want to continue that service and help create an economic / family environment in Cumberland County that will provide our youth with a desire to stay in Cumberland County and raise their families here.

Sanders: If your prospective constituents wanted to reach out to you and ask you questions about your positions or how to volunteer on your campaign, who can they reach out to?

Gonzalez: I am always open to direct contact. I can be easily reached via my cell phone (856) 404-8948 or via email WGonzalez@ccrro.com.
