The Sandy Hook Parent Sweeney Forgot

By Synnove Bakke | The Save Jersey Blog

Sandy HookIn their never-ending quest to trample upon New Jersey residents’ Second Amendment rights, Trenton Democrat yet again brought in the families of Newtown children this week and orchestrated yet another round of blatantly-manipulative photo ops, Save Jerseyans.

Senate President Steve Sweeney even squeezed out a few tears on live TV for extra effect, claiming that he changed his mind and vowed to lower magazine rounds maximum limits after meeting with them.

Did you notice the glaring omission?

A little quick background for those of you who are knew to all of this: regular Save Jersey readers know there’s a Twitter war raging between Sweeney and Assemblyman Lou Greenwald on the one side and 2A supporters across New Jersey on the other.

We posted about them here and here. Both lawmakers have taken to Twitter to try to defend their recent shady backroom deal on A2006 which lowers magazine rounds from 15 to 10.

No Second Amendment supporting groups were conferred with on this decision. Clear evidence proving new magazine restrictions won’t save a single lifeand likely place many others at risk — has been ignored.

It’s interesting though not surprising that Trenton Democrats have ignored another Newtown father, Mark Mattioli, who also lost his child on that tragic day. Mr. Mattioli strongly believes that more gun laws and restrictions on magazines are not the answer. He wants lawmakers to go after criminals instead of creating more laws that attacks law-abiding gun owners.

Mattioli says there’s too much group-thinking taking place in the legislature surrounding this all-important constitutional debate. The lawmakers are suspending reason and critical analysis when those things are precisely what’s needed most when the stakes are this high. He believes our elected officials should stop peddling fear and start making reasoned decisions where our liberty and Second Amendment rights are concerned.

We agree wholeheartedly with Mark Mattioli. There’s no honor in victimizing victims by using their emotions to advance a political agenda. Parents like Mark Mattioli should also have a seat at the table, and it’s sad that his voice is not being respected by most of these lawmakers. We know he’s not being listened to because, sadly, his rational views don’t fit neatly into the Democrat agenda.

I can’t help but feel anger over the fact that Senator Sweeney and his caucus blatantly disregard any voices which don’t echo their own predetermined narrative.

The New Jersey Second Amendment Society (NJ2AS) decided to fight back by posting Sweeney’s office number for its membership and urging supporters to call and voice their opinion. Callers report back that staff working the telephones rush them off the line without taking down any information. Did Sweeney forget that he works for the people and not the other way around?

Save Jersey Founder Matt Rooney posted an interesting comparison between Sweeney and Democrat Governor of CA, Jerry Brown. Sweeney’s movement further to the left will not sit well with constituents in his district, which is largely rural and voted heavily in Governor Christie’s favor last fall despite returning Sweeney to the legislature.

Discontent runs so deep that a petition to “recall” Sweeney also popped up online yesterday and already has over 600 names listed in the first 24 hours. It’s a symbolic but dramatic gesture that passionate 2A advocates believe serves as a strong indicator of no-confidence in the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful who they justifiably view as a traitorous flip-flopper on this all-important issue.

If you are worried about your Constitutional rights like we are, Save Jerseyans, feel free to call Steve Sweeney’s office and let him know what you think in firm but respectful terms. Even if they don’t log your call, there’s undoubtedly strength in numbers. You can also join NJ2AS on twitter and chime in during Sweeney’s weekly “Twitter Town Hall” every Thursday by using the hash tag #AskSenPres.

  1. As I mentioned in another post, the size of the magazine will not deter someone like Adam Lanza. There are age limitations, in Lanza’s case you had to be 21, he was 20. Why not raise the age requirement, it would have the same affect as the magazine restriction.

Lanza used two 9mm’s. It took the police 20 minutes to respond to the first call of ‘shot’s fired’. Even with a 10 round magazine capacity, with two 9mm’s, it would take 2 to 3 seconds to drop and insert another magazine. Even if an inexperienced person took 4 seconds, 20 minutes is a long time and that is a lot of rounds in that time frame. It is a feel good law that will have no bearing on those intent on committing a crime or heinous act.

Punishing legal responsible gun owners for the acts of those like Lanza can only allow criminals and terrosists to have a better advantage.

Will this also affect the magazine capacity on law enforcement?

  2. Sorry Joe, it doesn’t help our cause to distort and lie about the facts. Lanza never used a 9mm. He used a .22 rifle on his mom, an AR-15 on everyone in the school, and a 10mm glock to off himself. It did not take 20 minutes for police to respond, it was closer to 5 minutes. You’re spot on with the other points. Mag capacity didnt matter. Lanza had 30rnd mags, but he did tactical reloads; he only averaged 13 shots per mag before changing to a fresh one.

  3. Mopar, I didn’t intentionally try to distort the facts.

I suppose it depends on what source the information is found on, these are varying excerpts from different sources.

“Two 9mm handguns were recovered inside the school. An AR-15-type rifle also was found at the scene, but there were conflicting reports Friday night whether it had been used in the shooting.”

“NBC has been advised by federal and state authorities that no assault rifle was used in the shooting and in fact, they only recovered 4 hand guns from inside the school.”

“The primary weapon used in the attack was a “Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon.”

“Police haven’t said what kind of Glock 10 mm handgun Lanza used. But Glock lists two types on its website, including the Glock 20 and Glock 29.”

“The other handgun police said Lanza had with him during the school massacre was a Sig Sauer.”

And you are correct that police responded in 4.5 minutes. I had some bad info on the source I used.

The point is no matter how many laws, or conditions that are proposed you can’t stop the Adam Lanza’s of the world, no matter what the magazine capacity is.

  4. The capacity of a magazine sold to individuals in your state will make no difference, zip, on the crime statistics in the next 5 years. What will make a impact is the enforcement of the damn laws that are on the books as we speak, not more to come. The law enforcement community, the prosecution community and the judicial community as well as the penology system cannot handle the capacity they have now, let alone more laws. It is not a matter of how many bullets you can put in a gun, in matters how many police officers you can put on the street. Let the legislature open their eyes and see what Christie needs to do a job and give it to him, driving off hunters is not the solution.

  5. The governor of New Jersey Chris Christie is being miss informed on every issue , , gun control , Traffic , citizens that need help from Sandy !! And yes, the Roxbury landfill problem! In which he has no clue whatsoever of what’s going on in Roxbury!
He claims to be a Republican but Runs the state like a “dictator Democrat” !!!

  6. Once again, thank you Syn, for publishing the truth about Steve Sweeney and his rabid attack on NJ gun owners’ 2nd Amendment Rights. It’s strangely coincidental that Sweeney “evolved” on gun magazine limits immediately after NJ gun owners started to ask him uncomfortable questions about his personal concealed carry permit. It couldn’t possibly be that Sweeney is acting vindictively by having a sudden & opposite evolution on gun laws, could it? Could Sweeney be acting out against NJ gun owners because they supported his opponent in the last election? No, our Senate President wouldn’t intentionally strip 2nd Amendment Rights from NJ gun owners just because they went door to door for Nikki Trunk, his Senate opponent, would he?? No matter why Sweeney suddenly decided to completely change his long held views on magazine limits is of no matter anymore. What matters is his despicably ghoulish grave standing along with the Bloomberg funded Newtown Grave Crawlers. I have extreme compassion for anyone who has lost a child, no matter how it happened. What I don’t understand is why Sweeney had to go hundreds of miles north to the lily white town of Sandy Hook to find dead children, instead of looking to Camden or Newark or Jersey City. Are children of color who die from gang violence daily NOT worthy of Sweeney’s consideration? Apparently not.
