“Maybe I should offer a good thanks to the distinguished members of the majority, the Republicans, my chairman and others, for giving us an opportunity to have a deliberative constitutional discussion that reinforces the sanctity of this nation and how well it is that we have lasted some 400 years . . . “

~ Sheila Jackson Lee

Declaring the U.S. Constitution to be 400 years old on the House floor would mean the Constitution was signed in 1614, Save Jerseyans. That’s seven years after Jamestown, Virginia became America’s first permanent English settlement. As you and I know, the Constitution was ratified in 1787, a difference of 173 years by her math.

I don’t know whether it’s scarier that a Congresswoman made the mistake, or the fact that she’s hardly an exception to the rule. It’s also not Rep. Lee’s first disturbing slip-up.

This is the same Congresswoman who asked if the Pathfinder had succeeded in taking a picture of the flag planted on Mars by Neil Armstrong in 1969.

The same Congresswoman who once stated “[t]oday, we have two Vietnams, side by side, North and South, exchanging and working. We may not agree with all that North Vietnam is doing, but they are living in peace. I would look for a better human rights record for North Vietnam, but they are living side by side.”

Wow, right? Just wow!

The same Congresswoman who once complained to an airline for not having a meal she requested on the menu. “Don’t you know who I am?,” she reportedly squawked at an airline employee. “I’m Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Where is my seafood meal? I know it was ordered!”

She is a few crumbs short of a biscuit.

Here we are, 227 years later (please take note, Madam Congresswoman), and many are justifiably worried that illegal immigrants don’t know enough about American history to buy into the American experiment. What hope is there when our own representatives can’t get it right?

  1. And when we judge her by the content of their character (or absence thereof), she demands that we take her skin color into account. Poor Dr. King is spinning in his grave.
