Bell: Booker Peddling “Small Ideas”

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Jeff BellJeff Bell’s old boss Ronald Reagan once opined how “[t]here are no easy answers’ but there are simple answers.”

How true! But what happens when politicians prey on the electorate’s emotions (and in some cases ignorance) with small ideas? Disguising band aid solutions for actual cures? And avoiding hard choices in favor of selling “easy” answers?

Enter Cory Booker (D-Twitter), the man whom Mr. Bell is trying to dethrone in this year’s U.S. Senate contest that, according to the latest polling, is much more competitive than expected.

Bell sought to reiterate this point on the heels of a Wall Street Journal report detailing how bank loans to U.S. small businesses are down 18% from 2008; conversely, bank business loans rose 9% over the same period all while New Jersey’s unemployment rate remains stubbornly above the national average.

The Republican nominee says that the resulting credit crisis remains one of the biggest obstacles to economic growth and, specifically, job creation.

“Banks have the incentive under the zero interest policy not to lend to small businesses,” said Bell. “That’s a stupid policy and it should be corrected by allowing the market to set interest rates. An economic recovery is dependent upon this fundamental change in monetary policy, which is why I am running for Senate.”

Bell has made monetary police a centerpiece of his campaign; it nevertheless comes down to, in his mind, a question of general aptitude for tackling the challenges at hand. “Cory Booker has no plan for how to revive the economy,” he continued. “All he can offer are small ideas that by design have no power to reignite economic growth.”
