Let’s Not Become the Party of Nasty, Okay?

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Pursuing the social media Christmas greetings of leading Republicans this year, Save Jerseyans, I noticed a distinct pattern in the comments: nastiness.

Just one sample:

boehner christmas

The stuff on Mitch McConnell’s wall is even worse.

Serious question: What the hell is wrong with some of you???

It’s Christmastime! Relax. It’d be better for your general health and happiness. You also – FYI – run the risk of everyone finding out you’re intellectually-challenged, and discrediting your beef, when you substitute “Boner” for “Boehner” to express your displeasure.

What’s more? What I’ve observed recently on comment walls and social media threads is inconsistent with our principles, regardless of how you feel about any one politician. One of the things that I always enjoyed about being a conservative Republican was that we were the party of optimism. Morality. Manners. Basic decency in a political system contested by the angry, manipulative, hyper-emotional Left.

That’s not something we want! Right?

“Peace on Earth” and “Goodwill to Men” shouldn’t be just Christmas carol lyrics for a coalition that prides itself on safeguarding the right to freedom of religion. We’re the party of rational, passionate, INFORMED discourse. Not coarseness and pettiness! Let’s remember to act like it.
