While the New Jersey political world had its sights fixed on Essex County yesterday, Save Jerseyans, another significant story was unfolding at the other end of I-80.

Jerry Scanlan defeated Donald Ploetner in a county committee vote to succeed Ailish Hambel as chairman of the Sussex County Republican Committee.

“Unity; we must be united as we move toward November,” the new Chair explained when asked by Save Jersey about his top priorities now that he’s at the helm. “And growth; we must grow our numbers by reaching out to independent voters as well as with participation and then we will be successful in raising much needed funds and growing our grassroots team of supporters to keep our majority at all levels of government – Municipal, County and Federal.”

Unity in particular is on everyone’s mind in one of the state’s redder counties.

Scanlan’s will fill the vacancy left by the former Chairwoman and complete her 1-year long unexpired term. Hambel announced her intention to retire at the end of the primary cycle citing exhaustion after a particularly ugly LD24 Assembly primary catalyzed by the departure of Asw. Alison Littell McHose.
