A spirited albeit underdog challenged from Democrat Jim Schroeder of Hammonton for Dennis Levinson’s county executive chair is over, Save Jerseyans.

The Democrat withdrew from the campaign on Sunday citing “concerns over his health.” The news represents a possible blow to Democrat efforts on the ground to knock out Asm. Chris Brown in the Atlantic-monopolized Second Legislative District.

“With regret I will be suspending my campaign and dropping out of the race for Atlantic County Executive,” said Schroeder, a local municipal attorney and former Shamong Township (Burlington County) committeeman, in a statement released by his campaign. “After consulting with my doctor, I simply do not have the heart for the campaign and its rigors. I thank all those who have supported me and will continue to try to help people regardless of title or position.”

Here’s hoping Mr. Schroeder overcomes whatever challenge he is facing. He’s in our thoughts and prayers.
