New Jersey is likely to have one less competitive congressional battleground next cycle, Save Jerseyans, despite the promise of a higher-turnout presidential year.
PolitickerNJ.com’s Max Pizarro reported Monday afternoon that State Senator Jeff Van Drew (D-1), widely considered the Democrats’ strongest chance to take out veteran Congressman Frank LoBiondo (R, NJ-02), will once again take a pass on a federal campaign.

Van Drew was thought to be in a stronger position given Hillary Clinton’s expected victory in New Jersey next fall and a successful Assembly cycle that saw his candidates defeat Republican incumbent Sam Fiocchi. At this point, those familiar with the dynamics in NJ-02 and LD1 wonder if the 62-year-old Van Drew may believe he can wait until LoBiondo retires or, unthinkably, is perfectly content staying put.
