The Kardashian Election

By Bill Cortese | The Save Jersey Blog

Donald Trump is a cultural and political phenomenon. Akin to Beanie Babies or the Kardashians, he is a product of society’s willingness to suspend disbelief. The Pied Piper plays his tune and we mindlessly march to the sound of his outlandish remarks on Latinos, women, Muslims and veterans. His steadfast grip in the polls lends more credit to our media-driven culture, than Trump’s ever-changing stances on political issues. There is no shortage of footage or sound bytes from Trump praising everything from gun control to universal healthcare to Hillary Clinton’s leadership abilities. Trump is a spectacle, a ringleader, a ticket to the Greatest Show on Earth, the drunk uncle of the Republican Party.

For months, countless articles have predicted his demise, realistically examining the spectacle at hand, and all have been wrong. While Trump has recently slipped in some polls, his relentless brand occupies every media outlet, and Americans love it. His politically incorrect tune has created a media feeding frenzy. The Trump spectacle is vain, over the top and dramatic—almost like a reality show, you could say.

But this isn’t the Trump effect, it’s the Kardashian effect.

trump kardashianKeeping Up with the Kardashians might be one the most brainless shows on television, but you don’t have to admit that you’ve killed a couple of hours watching it once or twice. You don’t have to think hard while it’s on–the scripted problems that arise last long enough to keep you hooked until the next episode, so you stick around for another half hour. Make that an hour.

“Did Scott really leave Courtney, or was that just part of the script?” I guess you’ll have to tune in next time to see what happens.

So here we are, only eight weeks before the first voters set out to determine who will run for the highest office in the land, and Republicans have a reality show buffoon as the frontrunner. He’ll “Make America Great Again” by kicking out the Mexicans and keeping out the Muslims. He’ll be “good at the military”—whatever that means. “We’ll win so much, we’ll get tired of it,” he bellows. It’s a good thing he’s not like those politicians who just lie and tell people what they want to hear to get elected. He’s different.

ISIS has displayed its ability to extend its reach to our homeland, the economy continues to stagnate, and American credibility is in question now more than ever in recent history—but did you hear about what Trump said about Carly’s face?

We are living in the reality show that has become American politics and just like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, we just can’t change the channel. With each report about his ridiculousness we feed the beast. Trump blurs the lines between being famous and infamous, but what outlandish tune will he play next? The answer is: whatever will boost the ratings. Tune in next time for another episode of the Greatest Show on Earth!
