Trump once again outed as an ignorant ass. Will his supporters care?

By Matt Rooney| The Save Jersey Blog

The one thing upon which every GOP candidate on the Las Vegas stage could agree last night, Save Jerseyans, is how a U.S. president’s first and foremost responsibility is to protect Americans.

So shouldn’t an aspiring commander-in-chief understand how his most awesome weapon works?

Check out this unbelievable exchange in case you missed it between moderator Hugh Hewitt and Donald Trump… and then Marco Rubio

HEWITT: Mr. Trump — Dr. Carson just referenced the single most important job of the president, the command and the control and the care of the military forces. The triad, the missiles and submarines are aging out. It’s an executive order. What is your priority?

TRUMP: Well first of all, I think we absolutely need someone we can trust who is total responsibility who knows what he or she is doing that is so powerful and so important. And one of the things that I’m frankly most proud of is that in 2003, 2004, I was against going into Iraq because you are going to destabilize the Middle East. I called it, I called it very strongly and it was very important. But we have to be extremely vigilant and careful when it comes to nuclear. Nuclear changes the whole ball game. I would have said get out of Syria, get out. If we didn’t have the power of weaponry today, the power is so massive that we can’t just leave areas that 50 years ago or 75 years ago we wouldn’t care, it was hand-to-hand combat. The biggest problem this world has today is not President Obama with global warming, which is inconceivable, this is what he’s saying. The biggest problem we have today is nuclear proliferation anding are some maniac, having some madman go out and get a nuclear weapon. In my opinion, that is the single biggest problem that our country faces right now.

HEWITT: Of the three legs of the triad though, do you have a priority?

TRUMP: For me, nuclear, the power, the devastation, is very important to me.

HEWITT: Senator Rubio, do you have a response?

RUBIO: I do. Well first, let’s explain to people at home what the triad is. Maybe a lot of people have not heard that terminology before. The triad is the ability of the United States to conduct nuclear attacks using airplanes, using missiles launched from silos from the ground and from our nuclear subs. And it’s important, all three are critical. It gives us the ability at deterrence. Now, some are more critical than others. For example, the submarines. And that’s the Ohio class submarine that needs to be modernized. The air component also needs to be modernized. The B-52, as someone earlier pointed out, is an outdated model that was flown by the grandparents of the people flying it now. And we need a serious modernization program of our [cyber launch?] missiles as well.

Holy shit, folks.

The guy who is leading the Republican field nationally by a solid margin has no freakin’ clue how our country’s nuclear deterrent works. Had Marco Rubio not stepped in to school him, I suspect Mr. Trump’s backers would’ve remained similarly blissfully ignorant.

Trump couldn’t even stake out a clear position on Syria’s Assad regime that’s fate is at the heart of the ISIS crisis, complaining only about how the United States spent $4 trillion “trying to topple various people” instead of spending that money on roads and bridges.

Yet somehow I doubt the Trumpies will be moved. They’ve stuck with him through similar gaffes, taunting of the handicapped and attacks leveled on opponents’ wives.

This is what happens when you’re ruled by emotion. Trump supporters, in this respect, have become indistinguishable from the morally relativistic and factually bankrupt Obama supporters they’ve spent 7+ years criticizing. They’re soooo committed to flipping off Mitch McConnell and the Bush family by voting for Trump that they’re about to nominate a guy who is arguably as ignorant as Barack Obama circa 2008 in the realm of foreign affairs and military policy at a time when our enemies are closing in.

Can you imagine what Mark Levin or Rush Limbaugh would say if Obama had flunked the nuclear triad question in a debate? I’ll listen today to hear if they’re intellectually consistent when it comes to the Donald. There’s a first time for everything.

Looking ahead, here’s hoping at least enough of them wake up – and grow up – by New Hampshire to save the party (and the country) from what last night’s nuclear triad exchange confirmed would be an utter disaster for America.

  1. Ok so we should trust Christie to start WWIII, Rubio to let all illegals become citizens which by the way would mean the end of the Republican party. Cruz select 500% more H1-B1 Visas, how well did that work out for the employees of disney who lost their job and may lose their homes to foreign workers. Kasich who thinks that if we just go into the middle east and put our arms around them they will accept us and stop wanting to kill us. Fiorina who destroyed HP but keeps touting she was CEO, Rand Paul was good last night. Bottom line look what Establishment Republicans and Democrats have done to this country and now you would prefer a establishment candidate to Trump? That is crazy we need a real outsider to fix Washington!

  2. And yet Trump charges ahead in the polls. It must drive you completely frikking nuts that sooooo many people are soooooo much stoopider than you, eh Matt?

  3. Inquiring minds want to know, Matt Rooney: If Trump wins the nomination, will you and your fellow Establishment Hacks sit out the election and turn everything over to Cankles? Rumor has it that you inclined to do just that. Do tell.
