Christie indicts Clinton in interactive convention speech

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

christie conventionChris Christie caught a lot of grief for talking about himself (instead of the nominee) at the 2012 GOP convention in Tampa, Florida.

This year?

A major improvement! Trump got a few more mentions than Mitt Romney in Tuesday night’s big speech in Cleveland, Ohio, but the Governor of New Jersey trained his verbal fire squarely on the presumptive Democrat nominee, Hillary Clinton.

An attempt to pick up where Jim Comey left off?

“Tonight, as a former federal prosecutor, I welcome the opportunity to hold Hillary Clinton accountable,” Christie thundered to applause from the delegates. He then proceeded to list the former Secretary of State’s numerous foreign policy missteps, from Libya to Russia, and imploring the crowd to judge Clinton either “guilty” or “not guilty.” He even worked in cop killer Joanne Chesimard who murdered a New Jersey state trooper but nevertheless continues to successfully hide from justice in Cuba.

You can guess which way the jury went.

“Let’s face the facts: Hillary Clinton cared more about protecting her own secrets than American secrets,” Christie added towards the end, putting a fine point on the contrast between his law enforcement tenure and Clinton’s recent run-in with the FBI over the mishandling of sensitive e-mails.

“We didn’t disqualify Hillary Clinton to be president of the United States; the facts of her career disqualify her.”

It’s a good line.

And while Christie isn’t riding as high as he was four years ago when plenty of folks assumed he’d be the front runner this time around on top of facing withering criticism over his many defenses of Donald Trump, no one can say that this year’s speech was monopolized by self-advertisement.

Not a bad audition for Attorney General?
