Toscano triumphs in tight District 37 contest

It was tight, Save Jerseyans, but it’s over.

On Tuesday night, incumbent District 37 Chair Tom Toscano held off a challenge from Northvale Municipal Chair Ed Durfee in a re-vote after a tie two weeks ago.

The final tally? 73-68.

Toscano’s victory completes a sweep of sorts for brand new Bergen GOP Chairman Paul DiGaetano whose allies now control all of the populous county’s district chairmanships. Incumbent Mike Ryan held off a challenge from Janice Worner, an ally of former chairman Bob Yudin and Senator Gerald Cardinale, River Edge Municipal Chair Jim Arakelian prevailed in LD38 over Yudin-backer Pam Link of Hasbrouck Height, and District 36 Chairman Joe Crifasi was re-elected without opposition.

Toscano’s contest is also a personal victory; in the waning days of last month’s fierce DiGaetano vs. Yudin battle, the former chairman zeroes in on Toscano and other DiGaetano associates in a particularly vicious attack mailer.
