N.J. GOP Senators condemn “racist, bigot, segregationist” Margaret Sanger

sangerPlanned Parenthood is 100 years old, Save Jerseyans, and N.J. Democrats sought a unanimous legislative resolution congratulating the nation’s top abortion provider.

A group of veteran Republican state senators were having none of it.

“We cannot ignore the fact that Planned Parenthood was founded by Margaret Sanger, a well-documented racist, bigot, segregationist and self-proclaimed eugenist who advocated for using birth control and abortion to eradicate minorities from our population,” Senate Republicans Gerald Cardinale, Joseph Pennacchio, Steven Oroho, Michael Doherty, and Anthony Bucco said in a scathing joint statement released Thursday. “Sanger shared many values with the Klu Klux Klan and yet today Planned Parenthood sets up shop in minority communities. How can anyone support an organization with this sordid history?”

Sanger’s catalog of quotes and writings is mind-blowing; she once declared her belief that “[We should] apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.

“Not everyone shares the belief that Planned Parenthood is acting in the best interest of the women and families who seek out their services,” the N.J. GOP senators added. ” It was particularly upsetting that Father Tom Ganley, a catholic priest, was in the chamber having just given the invocation. The Senate owes him an apology.”

After a brief floor debate, Senate President Sweeney backed off and allowed for a roll call vote; the resolution subsequently passed 27 to 6.
