Book deal dies; legal notices bill hangs in the balance

Governor Chris Christie won’t get to profit from a book deal while in office, Save Jerseyans, but New Jersey’s newspapers might still be out millions of dollars in revenues.

The legislature had planned to take up both measures on Monday but both bills failed to make it to the floor after intensive backroom lobbying.

In the Assembly, leaders indicated that the ‘book deal’ (S2851/A4430) was dead and buried.

“The caucus engaged in a robust discussion today about the publication of legal ads and, clearly, opinions varied as to how best we can maintain transparency in this ever-evolving information age,” Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto said in a statement. “We will continue this discussion and consider all options.”

State House buzz suggests the legal notices bill may still find a second wind, a measure for which the Governor aggressively campaigned.
