Christie Hits Trail with MacArthur

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

christie and macarthurAfter stumping in Morris County for Jeff Bell on Monday and plenty of RGA candidates in the ensuing two days, Gov. Christie will head to the Mastoris Diner in Bordentown on Thursday to boost Tom MacArthur (R, NJ-03) down the home stretch.

The 1:00 p.m. meet-and-greet photo opportunity is part of the MacArthur campaign’s ambitious “Get Out The Vote for TMAC Tour” which is taking the congressional hopeful to every municipality in New Jersey’s Third Congressional District over the final two weeks before Election Day.

In truth, the Governor’s South Jersey visit may have more to do with Burlington County’s down-ballot contests than the House; MacArthur is building a double-digit lead in the district as GOP independent expenditure groups pile on and their Democrat counterparts check out.

South Plainfield’s GOP is a Model for N.J. Republicans

South Plainfield wouldn’t be a Republican town if numbers told the whole story, Save Jerseyans.

It’s a 2-to-1 “blue” blue collar Middlesex County borough of 23,000 residents which found itself relocated to Frank Pallone’s NJ-06 after the last round of congressional redistricting. Out of 14,119 registered voters living in South Plainfield as of 2011, fully 4,368 (or 30.9%) were registered as Democrats and 2,235 (15.8%) were registered as Republicans with another 7,511 (53.2%) classified as Unaffiliated.

First term Republican Mayor Matthew Anesh and his team weren’t deterred by the math, and I was thoroughly impressed by the results during a recent visit to his town’s GOP headquarters.

Christie Announces Ebola Plan

Chris Christie

While the feds continue to debate a travel ban on the campaign trail, Save Jerseyans, Gov. Chris Christie issued an executive order of his own today designed to improve coordination and preparedness in the face of a foreign Ebola threat that has resulted in three cases (thus far) on American soil.

These are the times in which we live, and New Jersey has one of the nation’s largest ports of entry from the African continent. “He’s asymptomatic,” Gov. Christie said during his Wednesday press conference, addressing a breaking story concerning a screened passenger from Liberia arriving at Newark’s Liberty International airport. “We anticipate that the patient and his wife will be released.”

The text of the Governor’s press release (explaining the force and effect of today’s order) is below the fold:

North Arlington’s Pronti: “Who are they kidding?”

By Matthew Gilson | The Save Jersey Blog

Dan Pronti

Dan Pronti

Continuing my series of interviews with local candidates around the state, I must admit up front to my bias; this candidate is one of my favorites running in the current cycle.

Last year, Dan Pronti won a special election triggered by the resignation of North Arlington Councilman Steve Tanelli following his election as freeholder. His win, realized with his running mates Joe Bianchi and Rich Hughes, created a 3-3 tie on the borough council of Bergen County’s southernmost town.

This year, Pronti is running for a full three-year term on a ticket headed by Councilman Bianchi who is challenging two-term incumbent Pete Massa for mayor, and joined on the council line by newcomer Kerry Cruz.

I sat down with Pronti at a recent Kathe Donovan fundraiser to discuss his campaign in Election 2014’s closing hours.

Christie Rocks Pancake House for Hogan

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Democrats are busy playing defense with two weeks left to go before America votes, Save Jerseyans, but Governor Chris Christie’s RGA tried to expand its target map on Tuesday by sending the chairman to a pancake house in deep blue Maryland  (he was in DC for a Chamber of Commerce keynote) to stump for gubernatorial candidate Larry Hogan, a Republican who appears to be closing the gap.

And no, before you ask, he never touched a pancake…

Christie to Chamber: “I’m tired of hearing about the minimum wage”

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

christie staring at town hallGov. Chris Christie was in one of his blunt moods at Tuesday’s U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform’s 15th Annual Legal Reform Summit in Washington, D.C., Save Jerseyans, letting the audience gathered to hear his keynote address know, in no uncertain terms, that he’s “tired” of minimum wage proponents behaving as if raising it is an elixir for America’s economic ills.

“Is that what parents aspire to for our children?” Christie, according to The Hill, told a large H Street crowd. “They aspire to a greater, growing America, where their children have the ability to make much more money and have much great success than they have, and that’s not about a higher minimum wage.”

Email Shocker: House Majority PAC Concedes 2014

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

white flagIt’s not unusual for party leaders to stay quiet when things are going badly, Save Jerseyans, which makes me wonder exactly how bad things are actually getting for national Democrats this cycle.

DCCC chief Steve Israel is openly venting his frustrations to the press. Weird. DNC head Debbie Wasserman Schultz may be a total nut job, but her stubborn “we’re going to hold the line” attitude is what you’d ordinarily expect from a party leader.

What really raised my eyebrows? Today’s House Majority PAC email ostensibly authored by former DNC Chairman Howard Dean…

Rove Drops $600k on Belgard’s Head

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

National Republicans are moving to shore up their position in takeover and open seats at this point in the 2014 midterm game, Save Jerseyans, while the Democrats continue to fall back.

The latest here at home? Crossroad GPS, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation associated with Karl Rove’s American Crossroads, just put $600,000 behind this TV spot in New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District:

Booker Cruising But House Dems Hitting Red Lights

Big Dem PAC Bolts NJ-03; and Cho Chooses to Vote Where?

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

cho and belgardYou can blame gerrymandering to some degree, sure, and the national political climate isn’t hospitable to Democrats this time around, but Roy Cho (D, NJ-05) and Aimee Belgard (D, NJ-03) also can’t seem to get out of their own way.

They can’t blame the top of the ticket. Cory Booker (D-Twitter) leads his Republican opponent, Jeff Bell, by no less than 16-points in the latest FDU poll out Tuesday morning, Save Jerseyans.

Empowerment, Not Entitlement

By Brian Goldberg | The Save Jersey Blog

GOPAs a middle-class, Jewish Republican from heavily Democrat Essex County (and, no, I’m not the only one…), I’ve seen firsthand the number of “closet conservatives” who won’t join our Party because of popular myths characterizing us as, well, take your pick: prejudiced, having a war on women, or out of touch with young voters.

During the course of my recent U.S. Senate campaign, I talked about the need for outreach to these communities that have been traditionally underrepresented in the Republican Party. There, we can find lots of conservatives who just need to know that we’re welcoming and the myths aren’t true. But, it is a two-part process to grow our Party.

Why Would the GOP Ever Abandon Reagan?

By Dan Cirucci | Dan Cirucci’s Blogspot

reaganI always have to chuckle when my liberal friends tell me that Republicans generally (and conservatives specifically) need to “get over” Ronald Reagan.

Think about how preposterous this notion is.

To begin with, what right do liberals have meddling in the affairs of the opposite party and poking their noses into a movement that is pretty much at odds with everything they embrace? Doesn’t make any sense, does it?

Inky Backs Booker for Talking About Talking

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

obama and bookerI loved the Courier-Post‘s weekend smackdown of Aimee Belgard’s substance-bereft NJ-03 campaign, Save Jerseyans.

Endorsing her opponent, the C-P editorial board rightly dismissed Belgard’s candidacy as “talking about talking.”

Ironically, that’s apparently the very reason why the Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board seems to think Cory Booker (D-Tiwtter) deserves a full term in the U.S. Senate.

NJ NRA Questionnaire Ratings: Belgard Leaves It Blank?

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

belgardI’ve been asked by more than a few readers where this year’s New Jersey federal candidates stand on the critical Second Amendment question.

The NRA-PVA isn’t infallible (they endorsed Harry Reid in the past before “breaking up” in 2013) but the organization does important work; here are this year’s ratings for our Garden State races from its official questionnaire.

Four candidates received formal endorsements: Frank LoBiondo (R, NJ-02), Tom MacArthur (R, NJ-03), Scott Garrett (R-NJ-05), and Leonard Lance (R, NJ-07). Lance and Lobiondo were the only recipients of the “Solidly pro-gun” A rating (the NRA’s second-highest designation).

Guess which candidate in a major contest sat on her hands and refused to answer?

Christie in Morristown: Let’s Debate, Cory!

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

The Bridgegate-embattled New Jersey Republican establishment opted out of taking an active role in the 2014 U.S. Senate primary, Save Jerseyans, a move which allowed the politically-savvy Reagan campaign veteran Jeff Bell to manufacture an upset victory on the June ballot.

It’s been all uphill from there

But you’d never know it Monday morning at the Morristown Diner where Governor Christie, in full campaign mode ahead of another two-day out-of-state RGA swing, once again stood side-by-side with Bell and laid into his fair weather friend Cory Booker (D-Twitter) for consenting to only one debate.
