UPDATE: Bramnick Goes to Bat for Shaneen Allen; Christie Won’t Act Pre-Adjudication

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

christie bridgegate presserUpdate: Our old friend Art Gallagher of MMM reached out to Chris Christie’s front office to see whether he’d intervene in the case now; he was told by the Governor’s spokesman, Michael Drewniak, that the pardon power is “only available once a case is adjudicated and upon formal request to the governor for consideration.” It’s an interesting question and, to the best of my knowledge, preemptive pardons are completely acceptable at the federal level with precedent for it going back to 1866. I welcome all of you amateur state constitutional experts out there to dive into Article II Section II.1 and render your own opinion regarding the state of the gubernatorial prerogative right here in New Jersey…

Original: Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick sounded every bit like the seasoned defense attorney that he is is during a snap press conference at the State House on Tuesday, Save Jerseyans, speaking out in favor of a GOP bill that would grant greater judicial discretion in situation analogous to that of Philadelphia mother Shaneen Allen.

O’Scanlon: Wisniewski Lacks “Testicular Fortitude”

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Declan O'Scanlon

Declan O’Scanlon

Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) has been a one-man battle tank in the war to ride New Jersey of red light cameras, Save Jerseyans, and he’s made substantial progress.

Who’s been less-than cooperative? John Wisniewski, the SCI chairman who also happens to serve as chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee. The Wiz is an advocate for EXPANDING their use. Asm. O’Scanlon thinks he knows why, and he didn’t mince words in a press release aimed directly at the senior Democrat.

Roger Goodell is NOT the Problem

By Joe Schilp | Joe’s Blog

Roger Goodell speaks at the Super Bowl Handoff Ceremony (February 1, 2014)

Months ago, when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for 2 games for knocking out his then-fiancee (now wife) in an elevator, I immediately felt that the penalty was not nearly enough.  Consider, former Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito got an 8-game suspension last season – and has not even been signed this season – for simply being one of a handful of teammates to exchange some taunting, private text messages with a teammate.  So, no, I did not think Goodell’s penalty was enough.

That said, the ridiculous grandstanding by attention-seeking legislators and marginalized groups like the National Organization of Women (they’re still around?!?!) calling for Goodell to lose his job are ridiculous.

Schundler Headlines Eck Event

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Bret Schundler

Bret Schundler

A familiar face in New Jersey Republican politics is getting involved in Election 2014, Save Jerseyans.

Former Education Commissioner Bret Schundler will headline a meet-and-greet for NJ-12 nominee Alieta Eck at a private home in Somerset on Sunday; sponsorships are going for $500 and individual tickets are $25 ($40 for couples).

A staunch conservative and two-time candidate for governor, Schundler has stayed largely behind-the-scenes in New Jersey politics going back to August 2010 when Governor Chris Christie fired him from the administration, claiming that Schundler lied about a botched “Race to the Top” application for $400 million. Schundler vehemently denied the allegation.

Christie and Cuomo vs. ISIS

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

President Barack Obama has announced his intention to strategize another possible-to-imminent war kinetic action micro-aggressive response (?), Save Jerseyans, this time to the mounting ISIS threat. Just please don’t call it ISIS; he likes ISIL.

Whatever.

In any event, despite the fact that the Obama Administration also insists that ISIS is a regionally-contained threat (if true, then why are we fighting them?), Governor Chris Christie and his counterpart, Andrew Cuomo, huddled up on Monday to discuss their own independent review of regional security; referencing the President’s ISIS speech, the pair announced a bi-state survey of state police and homeland security efforts in New Jersey and New York. The findings are due in ten days:

Death Tax Repeal Supporters Rally at State House

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

death tax rallyYou don’t need me to remind you that New Jersey is one of the most heavily taxed states in the country, Save Jerseyans. It’s the primary reason why you’re a fan of this site.

And while it’s generally difficult for both sides of the aisle to come to an agreement on the all-important tax issue, at least in terms of getting anything constructive accomplished, a legislative effort was formally launched on the State House steps this Monday that’s got bipartisan sponsorship.

The cause capable of making this possible? Repealing the “death tax.”

The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by state senator Steve Oroho, (R-Sussex) and Paul Sarlo (D-Wood Ridge), would repeal the estate tax over a 5-year time span.

Breaking Down the New NJ-03 Polling

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

belgard and macarthurWe’ve got two polls to digest today out of NJ-03, Save Jerseyans. We’ll take’em one at a time.

The first is a DCCC poll (as slanted and self-interested as they come) showing Tom MacArthur (R) three points up on Aimee Belgard (D), 46% to 43%. The DCCC model relies heavily on super-sized Dem turnout from a Cory Booker (D-Twitter) turnout operation which, to date, I haven’t seen any evidence of. He simply doesn’t need to buy that kind of a win this year; no one thinks he’s in that kind of danger.

Always take committee polling for what it is – a fundraising tool (I received an email touting the “results” not long after the news broke on Monday afternoon). I don’t blame’em for it. They’re doing their job. I just don’t see much positive news for Belgard to celebrate when her prime backer’s results show her (1) behind despite a full summer of rough ads attacking her opponents and, more amazingly, (2) a 10-point drop-off between the top of the ticket (Booker) and herself.

Keep’em At Your Sides Next Time, Guv!

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

The opening of a Jersey City drug treatment center isn’t particularly controversial, Save Jerseyans, and the event itself was attended by members of both parties (drug sentencing reform has been a cornerstone of Governor Christie’s anti-crime and economic policies; I’m less of a fan of the watered-down “ban the box” legislation). No harm no foul with a little non-partisan interaction, right?

Still, politics is a game of optics, and it isn’t always a fair game truth be told, so I can’t help but imagine this photograph, snapped by Jennifer Brown for The Record, showing up in a 2016 GOP primary attack ad…

Can you see it in your mind’s eye? First “the hug” and, now, the hands! Silly? Maybe. But since when was politics not silly? Oof… you can tell how uncomfortable he feels:

NJ Assemblywomen Call on Goodell to Resign

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

ray rice videoSome of the NJ GOP’s most prominent women just threw a flag on the field, Save Jerseyans. And they want a penalty assessed without delay.

Following the passage of a domestic violence legislative package on Monday in Trenton, a group of Republican legislators – Caroline Casagrande, Nancy F. Muñoz, Mary Pat Angelini, Amy Handlin, Alison McHose, Holly Schepisi, DiAnne Gove, BettyLou DeCroce, Donna Simon and Maria Rodriguez-Gregg – issued a statement calling for the immediate resignation of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

Momentum Still Building for Death Tax Reform

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

cemetery_overview1It’s finally starting to look like Trenton might do something about our death tax dilemma, Save Jerseyans.

We’ve been grinding this ax for a long time; only two U.S. states impose both an estate tax AND an inheritance tax. Consequently, anyone who can still afford to live in New Jersey (a shrinking pool) finds themselves deathly afraid of dying here.

State Senator Ray Lesniak (D) proposed repealing the estate tax back during the summer (although he wanted to exchange it for a millionaire’ tax). Now, a broad coalition of Assembly Republicans and Democrats are championing a bill (A1281) to (1) repeal New Jersey’s inheritance tax and (2) increase the estate tax exemption so that it’s in-line with the feds.

10 More Overused (Or Useless) Political Words and Phrases

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

argument fightOur last list of ten overused (or downright useless) words and phrases in American politics did pretty well, Save Jerseyans, so I decided to compile Volume II for your enjoyment and enlightenment.

Unfortunately, I suspect we could easily make it to Volume XXVI without reaching too deeply. Maybe we will. Stay tuned. It’s not like our national political discourse is trending in a smarter direction or anything, so I’m in no danger of having to make a snap decision. Stay tuned…

For now, without further ado, here’s Round #2 for your kind consideration:

Polls Auger Well For GOP This November

By Dan Cirucci | Dan Cirucci’s Blogspot

Obama in EgyptThe latest polls show President Obama’s approval at a new low – 38%.

That’s the verdict from the respected Gallup poll. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, the same poll shows that nearly 60% of those surveyed disapprove of the president’s job performance so far.

And there’s more bad news from a just-released NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that shows Obama’s approval rating for foreign policy is at a new low of 30%

The poll also found that 47% believe the country is less safe than it was before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks—up sharply from 28% just one year ago.

And thats not the half of it. Consider the following:

Christie: “We’ll Get Crist Unconfused”

Van Drew Owes Fiocchi an Apology

State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1)

State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1)

So I’m back from summer vacation, Save Jerseyans, and I ain’t happy.

In fact, I’m angry.

I read about Senator Jeff Van Drew’s appointing 25 people to the 1st District Economic task force. About how Van Drew made himself chair. About how he made Assemblyman Fluff Andrzejczak vice-chair.

And how he snubbed Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi by not only excluding Fiocchi’s 30 plus years of private sector from the task force for purely political reasons, but with these wildly inaccurate statements regarding Fiocchi‘s shock at being excluded:
