How Have My Legislators Been Doing on the Jobs Front?

By Ed Sheppard | The Save Jersey Blog

LD1From some of my previous posts, Save Jerseyans, you might have picked up that I live in the 1st Legislative District. And in the 1st District, jobs was the number 2013 campaign issue, as it still is today. As a result, I have closely been following what my three legislators have been doing to bring jobs to the region.

Why am I doing this? Because I love where I live, and it pains me whenever I hear that people are planning on moving away because they feel the area does not offer them a future. I want my home’s future to be bright. Unemployment in “deep” South Jersey remains at the highest levels of anyone in New Jersey.

Bell Can Beat Booker

By Jim Pezzullo | The Save Jersey Blog

jeff bellA whopping 59% of Americans have a negative view of the GOP, while a smaller majority – 50% – feel negatively about the Democrats. In the early 90s, the GOP polled at 53% favorable, and peaked in 2002 at 61% favorable. It’s hard to dispute that the Republican brand has been tarnished in recent years for any number of reasons.

So the question is: how are Republicans doing so well in so many Senate races despite crushing negativity towards their party? And how can this help Jeff Bell in a state where voters are hugely dissatisfied with both parties?

The answer lies in the candidates themselves.

Dodging Blows from Both Sides in NH

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

This is what Chris Christie’s public life has become, Save Jerseyans.

Everyone on the planet loved him for a couple of years (save for a few New Jersey union-types and their Democrat henchmen). Now when he visits New Hampshire on a cool late July day to campaign in his capacity as RGA Chairman, he’s dodging barbs from his frenemies in the Democrat/media establishment AND the Republican Party’s tea party-ish defectors in the independent expenditure world who, ironically, hate him ever more than the liberals.

The Richard Jemmons character in Primary Colors said it best: “The media giveth, and go &%$# yourself.”

It ain’t pretty or clean but it’s entirely accurate…

Bail Reform Fight is 100% Politics

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Chris Christie addressed a joint session of the legislature on Thursday and his message was painfully simple, Save Jerseyans:

“I believe that I’ve been patient. And 2 1/2 of conversation and discussion, it seems to me, is sufficient.”

He’s referring, of course, to bail reform which in of itself isn’t very controversial. The Republican Governor and former U.S. Attorney – who is anything but a libertarian – joked about finding himself in bed with the ACLU on this particular issue, and the N.J. Supreme Court is on his side, too. Many South Jersey machine Democrats are backing it. Asm. Jon Bramnick, the GOP Assembly Minority Leader, says that there are sufficient votes for passage in his chamber.

So what’s the hold-up? Politics! What else…

Former CR State Chair Seeks Council Seat

By Matthew Gilson | The Save Jersey Blog

Save Jersey monitors races at both ends of the ballot. Typically, the ones the “bottom” are what matter most to you and your community.

I recently sat down with one of the youngest candidates seeking office this year, Save Jersey, seeking to represent Hightstown at age 23. Some of you will know the name.  During my time as Seton Hall CR chair, while I would like to claim restoring the club as a dominant force was all my own doing, I had a lot of help from the state organization.  The chairman of that organization was Connor Montferrat; he’s become one of my good friends and I am truly excited to see him running for council in his hometown this year.

We discussed a wide-range of issues:

Smith: “Textbook Anti-Semitism”

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Rep. Chris Smith (R, NJ-04) has a reputation for championing underdogs domestically and internationally, Save Jerseyans. The ultimate underdog in human history has been the Jewish people, scapegoated and abused throughout the ages and still today in even the most unlikely of places.

To hear the media tell it, the Israeli Defense Force’s ongoing campaign to destroy terror tunnels and rocket launching sites in Gaza is little more than the latest dust up in an arcane border dispute or, worse, a human rights travesty perpetrated by a U.S. puppet.

On Tuesday, Smith took to the house floor and articulately called on the Obama Administration to grow a spine (my words, not his), speak out in Israel’s defense, and help explain to the world that anti-Semitism is what’s really at work here…

This Weekend: National YRs in A.C.

By Mike Thulen | New Jersey Young Republican Federation

atlantic city skylineHello Save Jerseyans!  If you have not already heard, the New Jersey Young Republicans are hosting a huge two-day event in Atlantic City this weekend, August 1st and 2nd

The new Republican Mayor of Atlantic City Don Guardian heard that the Young Republicans were looking for a place to hold their annual Summer Bash this year and reached out to us.  The Mayor wanted to bring all of the Young Republicans to town for some amazing summer fun at the best place to host any big event in New Jersey, the Atlantic City Boardwalk.   With the Mayors help and the assistance of some of his friendly local business owners, a great event at an outstanding price was put together for not only New Jersey Young Republicans but also the National Young Republican Organization who decided to hold their Summer Board meeting in A.C. to coincide with the Summer Bash.

DuHaime’s Solid Point About NH Attack Ads

According to NH Journal, the 501(c)(4) advocacy group Judicial Crisis Network will launch new “television, radio and digital advertising” in New Hampshire on Wednesday ahead of Governor Chris Christie’s latest RGA-related trip to the presidential battleground.

Christie is there to raise money; they’re there to raise the issue of his judicial nominations.

200+ Days In, Staying Alive is Helping Christie

By Joe Sinagra | The Save Jersey Blog

George_Washington_Bridge,_HAER_NY-129-8Back in January I wrote an article in Matt Rooney’s Save Jersey about Bridgegate jumping the shark, the witch hunt launched by Democrats trying to discredit Gov. Chris Christie by connecting him with scandal surrounding allegedly politically-motivated Fort Lee lane closures.

And guess what, Save Jerseyans? In all the months since the scandal broke (202 days since the legendary marathon presser), the Governor has in no way been connected with any knowledge of what transpired, try as they might Democrats have not been able to connect the dots. You would think with all the testimony, all the meetings, all the questions, and all of the people who testified, that one individual would have cracked under the pressure and said it was the Governor who ordered the lane closings…. had it really gone down like that.

Kathe Right to Tackle Tedesco’s Tanks

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

tedescotankBergen County isn’t officially organizing a formal army, Save Jerseyans, but it is drawing fire from the ideological right and even the anything-but-right Bergen Record for purchasing military grade vehicles and equipment.

To be fair, this trend is hardly unique to Bergen. As Barack Obama continues to gut our military, local governments across America are buying surplus military tools including M-16 rifles, grenades, and yes, armored vehicles designed to withstand mortar and rocket fire as well as roadside bombs.

What makes it a little more disturbing in Bergen is the Democrat-led push to merge the county police force with the sheriff’s department.

Christie Tops CNN Poll… Sort Of

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Governor Chris Christie stumping in Iowa during Election 2012.

Another new poll (this one from CNN) dropped Tuesday showing Chris Christie leading the GP 2016 hypothetical primary pack by 1-point, Save Jerseyans. The other “top” contenders – Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee – are tied at 12%.

I’m starting to loathe these polls for a few different reasons (no offense intended, CNN, ’cause you’re hardly the only offenders).

For starters, in a crowded primary, the state-by-state primary/caucus polls are what matters.

Party-Building Happens Online, Too

Republican National Committee Fundraising Email Generating Some Negative Responses Among the Base

ElephantsBy Christopher A. Canarelli | The Save Jersey Blog

Those who live politics tend to look at Fridays as optimal days to release news, dump documents or relay information that may not go as noticed; especially during the summer when we here in New Jersey are getting a head start on the weekend drive down the Garden State Parkway to the Jersey Shore.  The Republican National Committee followed this pattern, but did not prepare for the response it would garner.

Last Friday, a fundraising email from Tony Parker, Treasurer of the Republican National Committee, went out to many members of the Young Republicans, not just in New Jersey, but across the country.

What was likely meant as an attention-grabbing headline and opening, came across quite negatively to its recipients.

Buyers’ Remorse

Now Americans Say They Want Romney

By Dan Cirucci | Dan Cirucci’s Blogspot

Romney vs. ObamaGet this: Mitt Romney would win the popular vote if a rematch of the 2012 election against President Obama were held today, a new CNN/ORC poll shows.

According to the poll, if the 2012 election were held again today, Romney would receive 53% of the popular vote while Obama would receive only 44%, CNN reported. That’s quite a turnaround, especially when you consider that Obama beat Romney 51%-47% in the actual election.

And there’s more interesting news in the poll:

3rd Poll Shows Booker Vulnerable

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

Bell poses for a photograph with NJ-06 Congressional Candidate Anthony E Wilkinson.

Bell poses for a photograph with NJ-06 Congressional Candidate Anthony E Wilkinson.

Am I the only one who senses another blown opportunity in the making, Save Jerseyans?

After two summer polls found Cory Booker (D-Twitter) under 50% in his quest for a full Senate term head-to-head with GOP challenger Jeff Bell, we now have a NYT-CBS poll with Booker at 50% but Bell nipping at his heels at 43%, only 7-points back (for those of you who learned math in a NJEA failure factory).

Yes, Bell has an uphill climb against the younger, hipper, well-heeled Democrat superstar who, of course, hasn’t gone on television yet. But you can turn that analysis on its head by pointing out that Bell, who only recently returned to New Jersey residency and doesn’t have two nickles to rub together, also hasn’t done much of anything.

Valerie Strauss: Consistent Education Elitist

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

obama toast“New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is consistent — at least when it comes to espousing total  indifference to what Newark residents want for their state-operated public school system.”

That’s how The Washington Post‘s Valerie Strauss began her latest snarky education post, Save Jerseyans, published on Friday; for those who don’t follow WashPo, Strauss is an Obama liberal archetype who railed against Mitt Romney’s educational reform proposals in 2012 but, like the President, sends her own children to private school.

Remember: there’s always one set of rules for them and another for the unwashed masses for whom they attempt to control every consequential life decision…
