Our old friend State Senator Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Union) is hoping to avoid a second “Kwon Dive” and see Governor Christie’s third Supreme Court nominee, Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce Harris, avoid his predecessor’s politically grisly fate.

In short, he’s hoping for Trenton Democrats to play nice. The ultimate “impossible dream,” Save Jerseyans!

You’ll recall (because how could you forget?) Harris was nominated by Governor Christie back on January 23rd along with Philip Kwon, an assistant state attorney general whose family’s (not his) liquor store had been scrutinized as part of a federal tax investigation. The Democrat-controlled State Senate Judiciary Committee subsequently rejected Kwon a full three months later on March 22nd. It was transparently political; the hearing itself was, to quote Joe Kyrillos, a “spectacle.”

Now, we don’t know much about Harris other than that (1) he’s a mayor, (2) he’s an openly gay African American, and (3) he had informally lobbied legislators to support gay marriage via email in 2009. Only one of these facts is controversial. Can you guess which one? Expanding on Point #3, Harris also allegedly pledged to Governor Christie that he would recuse himself from a hypothetical gay marriage case before the New Jersey Supreme Court. This upsets both sides of the ideological divide. Understandably so.

All the more reason to hold an open and fair hearing, right?

With all of this background information in mind, Senator Kean is warning his Democrat colleagues to treat Harris with all due respect:

Bruce Harris is an accomplished attorney and public servant who is, by any objective measure, well-qualified to serve on our state’s highest court. More important than the personal and racial diversity that he would bring to the Supreme Court is the diversity of legal and professional experience he offers a body that makes decisions affecting the lives of everyone in our state.

Bruce deserves a fair hearing and open-minded consideration by members of the committee. As a public and commercial finance attorney and a long-standing local elected official, Bruce Harris uniquely understands how the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the State Constitution impacts the citizens of this state.

Unfortunately, the last confirmation conducted for a Supreme Court nominee was anything but fair, impartial, or deliberate. Phil Kwon was rejected for reasons of partisanship and politics rather than his merits and qualifications.

The Senate already has one black eye from the Kwon fiasco. I encourage my colleagues not to further shame this institution and conduct Bruce Harris’s hearing with the seriousness that is required by our state Constitution.”

Of course, following the state Constitution would require Democrats to first respect our state Constitution. Or just common norms of decency!

These hearing are designed to embarrass Governor Christie. Pure and simple, Save Jerseyans. I’m expecting nothing different this time around, and will be pleasantly surprised if Democrats don’t (again) turn our judicial nomination process into an obscene joke.

The contrast between President Obama and Mitt Romney’s respective “first” campaign TV commercials of the 2012 general election says all you need to know about the difference between these two men.

Hint: it’s not a flattering comparison for our current Commander-in-Chief!

Obama’s opening salvo is a reflection of his personality: a sarcastic, cynical and thoroughly-misleading personal attack on Mitt Romney, Bain Capital and our capitalist system writ large. Historically, campaigns typically start off with positive “bio” or ”vision” thematic pieces intended to introduce (or reintroduce) their candidate to the public. It’s extremely telling how, unlike Reagan in ’84 or Bush in ’04, Obama is forced to go negative right out of the gate. Very, very sad!

But then again, what can we expect to see when the Obama Administration has absolutely nothing positive to hang its hat on, Save Jerseyans.

By contrast, Mitt Romney is responding with his brand new and decidedly upbeat “Day One” ad. It’s literally a look at what his first day in office might look like, and I think it’s a vision most Americans would see as a welcome change:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzK3ZX7hvzg

‘Round One’ of the TV war? Romney by knock-out, Save Jerseyans!

What’s your take? Weigh in below…

It’s extensive, and it includes three legislators and two freeholders:

Senator Kevin O’Toole

Assemblyman David Russo

Assemblyman Scott Rumana

Christopher G. Sinisi, Councilman, Wallington

Mike Cerbo and Karen Haggerty, Lyndhurst

Bruce Young, Councilman, Carlstadt

Joel Brizzi, Councilman, East Rutherford

Maura DeNicola, Freeholder

Robert Hermansen, Freeholder

Drita McNamara, Wyckoff Municipal Chairwoman

Rudy Boonstra, District 40 Chairman

Chris DePhillips, Mayor, Wyckoff

Dennis Bonugora Franklin Lakes, Municipal Chairman

Lenore Cohen, Ridgewood municipal chair

John Butler, Glen Rock Municipal Chairman

Tom Giordano, Mayor, Waldwick

Bud O’Hagan, Mayor, Midland Park

Gary Burns, former Councilman & Municipal Chairman North Arlington

Andrew Cimiluca, Councilman, Saddle Brook

Ben Focarino, BCRO State Committeeman

Eleanor Nissley, BCRO State Committeewoman

Henry Wallace, Lodi Municipal Chairman

Liz White, Councilwoman, Allendale

Jacqueline McSwiggan, Councilwoman, Allendale

No surprises thus far, Save Jerseyans.

The BCRO’s uncivil war has been raging for months in venues ranging from the courtroom to the pages of the Bergen Record and our own Save Jersey message boards. This list is merely a public affirmation of the battle lines. Unsurprisingly, the statement accompanying Rottino’s list pledged a positive campaign while simultaneously firing a few not-so-subtle broadsides in the direction of Chairman Yudin:

I know many of you are tired of being ignored by BCRO leadership and you want to have a constructive voice in how we approach issues and campaigns. I guarantee you that as your chairman, your voice will be heard and we will have open and honest communication.

For the BCRO to prosper we must become a cohesive party that looks forward not backward. We must focus the organization’s attention on running effective campaigns to beat Democrats and stop beating up on ourselves. We must focus on raising money in new and creative ways. And we must stop creating factions within the party that drain the BCRO of energy and constructive ideas.

A third candidate, John McCann, is also vying for the big chair.

Much is being made of disappointing revenue news out of Trenton this week. Senator Sarlo’s salivary glands are working overtime, Save Jerseyans.

That’s because NJ Democrats follow the Rahm Emmanuel Rule: Crisis = Opportunity (for government intervention/expansion).

We also got jobs news. New Jersey netted 2,600 jobs in April 2012 while the unemployment rate ticked up ever-so slightly, by 0.1%, to 9.1%. That’s a full point above the national average of 8.1%.

A look at the larger trend, however, is very telling. New Jersey actually gained 6,300 private sector jobs last month but shed 3,700 government workers. Overall, we’ve gained 71,200 private sector positions since Chris Christie took office in January 2010 and lost 26,000 government jobs.

More revenue-producing positions. Less tax-financed jobs. Sounds like ”progress” to me!

And is it just me, folks, or has anyone else noticed no change whatsoever in the “quality” of service coming out of government in the wake of public sector downsizing (something Corzine used to blather on and on about)?

All of this begs the question… why are Democrats debating whether to cut taxes but NOT whether to slash spending?

You can’t tell me there isn’t at least $5 billion in Governor Christie’s controversial $32.1 billion dollar proposal that is non-essential. That could pay for a “millionaire tax cut” and then some!

Yet we haven’t heard a peep out of anyone in Trenton about cutting here, snipping there, and trimming a little bit from all sides as the Obama Economy continues to stagnate. On either side of the aisle. Zip. Nothing. Nada.

Candidate Chris Christie once observed how New Jersey suffered from an acute “spending problem,” not a real “revenue problem.” He’s still 100% right. There’s plenty of liquidity in our relatively wealthy state to both maintain essential operations AND return money to the people who pay the bills and drive private investment, recession notwithstanding. That being the case, there’s absolutely no imaginable reason to deny relief to taxpayers unless our governmental leaders first sit down and get busy with a box full of red pens and calculators! Right?

I’m just waiting for someone to man up and say it. Unfortunately, I’ll probably die of old age before a Democrat proposes cutting spending. And while Republicans have take significant steps to rein in public sector union power (the natural first step), they seem reluctant to discuss big cuts (consolidating departments, mass layoffs, etc.) at this present time.

Hence, we’re stuck reliving the same tired, stupid, wrong debate right now, Save Jerseyans, over and over again. It’s like a bad Groundhog Day sequel. We’ve won Round One insofar as the Dem leaders are afraid to openly discuss tax hikes. Who in Trenton has the courage to move the narrative forward and shift the discussion from tax cuts to spending cuts? Does such an individual exist? Or are we wasting our time trying to “Save” Jersey when there are no leaders around willing to lead?

You know I don’t believe that, Save Jerseyans. There’s hope. But we need to keep the pressure up! I hope you’re with me.

Many New Jerseyans with Shore homes and/or businesses will spend the next few days preparing for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. There are also parades to plan, memorial ceremonies to arrange and barbecues to orchestrate.

Governor Chris Christie has different plans, Save Jerseyans.

He’ll spend this weekend filling his party’s coffers and making friends in the process.

On Thursday evening, Christie joined New Mexico U.S. Senate Candidate Heather Wilson for a reported $2,500 per plate fundraiser at the swanky “21 Club” on Manhattan’s Upper West Side (and I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that he told attendees he’s rooting for the Rangers over the Devils).

Tonight, he will head South on I-95 to headline a fundraiser for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Richmond, Virginia. Then, on Saturday, the Guv is slated to head a little further west and deliver the keynote address for the Republican Party of Kentucky’s Lincoln Day Dinner…

Christie’s making it rain at home, too, for state Senator Joe Kyrillos, and his expansive network have been laboring for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign since last year. It’s actually pretty hard to find a “major” Republican prospect anywhere in America who isn’t (1) a past beneficiary of Christie’s fundraising, (2) slated to be a beneficiary of Christie’s fundraising, or (3) furiously begging Christie’s people to bring him in for a fundraiser. Even Democrats use his visage to raise money and generate contacts.

The downside of all this travel is that it provides Democrats with an easy Democrat point of attack in 2013. They’ll spend millions claiming it’s evidence of a “lack of focus” on New Jersey issues. Laughable, sure, since Christie has been able to accomplish more in three years than any of his less-popular predecessors combined. But the truth is a relative affair for swing voters who “learn” about their leaders exclusively through Perez Hilton and 30-second October TV spots.

Your Blogger-in-Chief looks at things a little differently as you might expect, Save Jerseyans. In just the 2 1/2 years since Christie’s election, New Jersey has transformed from a national laughingstock (like California) into ground zero of the battle to reclaim government for the taxpayers (second only perhaps to Wisconsin where, yes, Christie is also working his magic).

Challenges still abound. Change doesn’t happen overnight. Still, Christie’s fortitude is inspiring similar reform efforts across the country. That’s good for him politically and New Jersey financially. How? Like I said, he’s single-handedly changing our national image. It’s a good thing for everyone involved! Not just Cantor & Co.

Liberty and Prosperity may be the core values of our state’s motto, but they are hard to come by in New Jersey’s marijuana laws.

Prosperity may be on the upswing through the implementation and eventual (hopefully) expansion of the state’s medical marijuana program. Marijuana has proven usefulness as a pain reducer for patients suffering from various ailments, with fewer side effects than prescription chemical compounds. The progression from medical usage to growth in a tax revenue- and employment-producing dispensary market should be easy enough, but so far some NIMBY issues and the dragging feet of the Christie administration have stalled implementation.

Until now, though, we’ve made very little headway on the Liberty part – penalties for marijuana possession and sale remain stiff in New Jersey. I can leave it to other sources to dive into the deleterious effects of American drug policy, from destroying the lives of nonviolent offenders to bloating our prison population to sending more money to nefarious foreign drug producers.

Fortunately, a bipartisan group of state legislators is pushing a bill (A1465) to decriminalize small-scale possession…

These politicians want to reduce fines from $1000 to $150 for the first offense and eliminating the prospect of spending six months in prison with violent criminals. This kind of forward looking drug policy is long overdue, and I salute this bill’s cosponsors for having the courage to stand against New Jersey’s nanny state tendencies.

I urge each of you freedom-loving Save Jerseyans to call or email your local representatives to support this bill. The Assembly Judiciary Committee will consider the bill when it convenes on Monday, so pay particular attention to these folks:

Mariela Castro, a gay rights activist and daughter of communist Cuban dictator Raul Castro (weird, right?), has been granted a visa by the U.S. Department of State.

She’s allegedly here to attend some elitist academic love-in down San Francisco way. At home, she’s pushed for key items in the international “gay rights” agenda including the legalization of sex reassignment surgery (which is also now provided gratis, i.e. paid for by the government, in Cuba since 2008 thanks to her father).

Gotta love communism! And since she’s been an advocate for same sex policies much longer than Obama (and under objectively harsher conditions), you would expect the American Left to embrace her with open arms. Right?

Wrong. Political calculations typically trump moral consistency in the public sphere, so not everyone on the Left is down with Hilldawg’s decision, Save Jerseyans. In fact, Cuban Americans are incensed on both sides of the aisle; they view her as a shill for her father (and aging uncle’s) evil regime. U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), himself a Cuban American, issued a statement picked up by The Miami Herald in which he labels Castro’s daughter “a vociferous advocate of the regime and opponent of democracy, who has defended the regime’s brutal repression of democracy activists.”

Menendez’s presumptive November challenger Joe Kyrillos wasn’t far behind:

The issuance of this visa sends the exact opposite message to the liberators fighting for freedom in Cuba. Allowing Raul Castro’s daughter to come into our country has the potential to undo years of efforts to end the tyranny of the Castro regime and bring freedom to the Cuban people. She is a virulent supporter of what her father and uncle stand for- oppression and control. By opening our doors to her- it’s as if we are opening our doors to tyranny and oppression and shutting the door on all those fighting for our shared ideal – freedom. This is a terrible decision, and it should be reversed immediately.”

Neither Kyrillos nor Menendez picked this issue out of a hat, Save Jerseyans.

As we’ve discussed before at Save Jersey, New Jersey (and Northeast Jersey in particular) is home to one of the nation’s largest Cuban American populations. There are approximately 140,000 ethnic Cubans living in the New York City metro area and roughly 80,000 Cuban Americans in the Garden State; that’s works out to about 1 in every 100 New Jersey residents with ties to Cuba.

Hispanics could actually be a key “swing vote” in 2012 for New Jersey candidates, especially if U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) lands on the GOP ticket as Mitt Romney’s VP candidate. Don’t think it’s impossible just because Menendez is himself of Cuban ancestry. In 2004, George W. Bush of all people garnered almost 44% of New Jersey’s Hispanic voters! Christie nabbed just 32% five years later but hey, presidential cycles are always different beasts. Anything is possible.

Therefore, you can expect Cuban issues to remain alive and well in this year’s NJ Senate Race regardless of whether Ms. Castro makes any return visits.

Does reliable, objective, unadulterated trust worthy journalism still exist?

Save Jerseyans: we know better, but I’m here to warn you its getting worse.

The “Fourth Estate,” the one time crucial participant in democracy, has totally succumbed to the enticements of liberal thinking.

Being a former Philadelphia television reporter and a longtime media observer, I can personally attest to the gross bias that has - and continues to permeate - the news.

The “mainstream media” has gone totally off the rails…

I am no Pollyanna for the record; the birth of conservative news was a direct response to the unrelenting and outrageous liberal leanings of CNN, CBS, NBC and ABC.

“All the news that’s fit to print” but only in their opinion.

The latest example, a new CBS-New York Times Poll showsthat since April, women have gone from strongly backing Obama to endorsing Romney. Obama had held a 49 percent to 43 percent lead among women. That has now flipped to 46 percent backing Romney with 44 percent for Obama, an 8-point switch.

Now try finding that story! Omission of facts –ignoring a story – is the antithesis of journalistic integrity.

Then there is The Boston Globe that buried a mea culpa in its paper admitting to erroneously reporting Massachusetts (D) Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren’s 1/32 Cherokee Indian heritage. Warren, a Harvard professor, claimed Native American ancestry when she was a junior faculty member allegedly in order to obtain “minority law teacher” status. It should have been an above the fold headline!

Given the distressing trends in mainstream news, Save Jerseyans, we must all be a critical consumers of the public record. Think of it this way: before buying a car you read reviews in Consumer Reports, cruise the Internet, kick the tires — in other words, you perform due diligence. News is also product. If you don’t like the quality then don’t buy it. Why do you think the circulation of the NYT has hit rock bottom?

Whether it be Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer or Bill O’Reilly reporting the news, it’s all of our responsibilities to avoid becoming complicit, spoon fed dummies. We must be objective observers, weary of what is being reported, either blatantly or with nuance.

Seek out the truth. Don’t assume it’s always being served up for you!

A new seven-figure TV commercial campaign thanks both Chris Christie and “Reformers from Both Sides.”

I wouldn’t go as far as they did, Save Jerseyans, but the good people over at the Committee for Our Children’s Future (CCF), a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization, just launched their fourth advertisement in a series of pro-Christie TV commercials celebrating the accomplishments of New Jersey’s Governor in the areas of job creation, education reform and tax policies.

This latest buy set them back $1.6 million. We’ve posted some of their prior ads right here at Save Jersey.

Now, when your Blogger-in-Chief says he wouldn’t have gone “as far,” I’m referring to the average joes and janes sprinkled throughout this latest commercial who repeatedly thank, without paraphrasing, ”Chris Christie and reformers on both sides.” It’s a perfectly fine sentiment; there are a few courageous Dems out there.

But there’s also no getting around the fact that “bipartisanship” never truly catalyzes reform – courage and principles do, Save Jerseyans!

Governor Christie expends plenty of energy invoking the spirit of bipartisanship, too, but he does so because it’s a sound political strategy. Americans fancy themselves “polite” and “reasonable” people. And it’s true, we do have a “genius for compromise” as the late great Shelby Foote once observed.

But how many of Chris Christie’s successes have been achieved purely through negotiation and accomodation? Or did we win pension reform, a property tax cap, education reform advances and an entirely new approach to taxes in Trenton because the Governor shelved good manners and went to war for the taxpayers?

Said another way, how many videos of Governor Christie walking opponent’s grandmothers across the street and signing Cumbayá with Steve Sweeney have gone viral on YouTube?

Yes, I’m nitpicking but you can see my point, Save Jerseyans. Compromise is worthwhile when it’s not treated as a “good” or “end” unto itself. It’s ideally the product of a good faith struggle to achieve a best possible result on behalf of your client – in this case, the people of New Jersey. So organizations like Committee for Our Children’s Future aren’t wrong per se for giving cooperative liberals a little positive reinforcement.

I just think it would be a mistake to assume their cooperation is anything other than more Sweeney-esque political calculations necessitated by having to co-exist with New Jersey’s warrior governor.

The race is between Ernesto Cullari, a newcomer in New Jersey politics, and Anna Little, a name we have all come to know very well in the last few years.

Little won a shock victory in 2010 over Diane Gooch in the same district. Known as a “Tea Party darling,” Little lost to longtime Congressman Frank Pallone by 11 percent.

Last week, the Cullari camp began to attack Little for property tax hikes and fee increases that took place during her tenure as Highlands Mayor before her congressional run. A statement also appeared in a PolitickerNJ post blasting Little’s conservative credentials:

It’s very hard for me to understand how one can call oneself a conservative when they have a history of raising fees and taxes. You can’t expect to raise government productivity when the weight of government is around your neck. We’ve reached a point where it’s just obvious.”

Little, from what I can tell, has given little in the way of response. However, some of her supporters (I have blocked out the names and contact information to preserve their privacy) in her home county of Monmouth, where Cullari has the party line, aren’t staying so quiet.

I recently received a copy of what appears to be one of the worst pieces of campaign literature I have ever seen (click to enlarge). Not worst in a tasteless sense (that is a hard mark to hit), but just worst in terms of effectiveness. It is a full page of black text of varying size and typeface. The most positive thing that I can say about the letter is that it is difficult to read at any fluid pace. And while, as I said, it is not the most tasteless political literature I have ever seen, it certainly makes an attempt.

The piece claims that Cullari cannot know anything about our county, its history, or its needs because he was “born in the Philippines.”

First, I would love the author of this piece to enlighten me on why someone born in another country who has come to the United States and made a successful life for himself here could not know about history of the 6th district or the challenges we face in government at this time.

Second, and perhaps the most important, Cullari was born in New Jersey and lives in Asbury Park. So the statement is not even true! In an attempt to appeal to the worst in people, the author couldn’t even be bothered to fact check.

In the interest of accuracy, I called the Cullari campaign to get their side of the story, and they put Ernesto on the phone immediately. Cullari explained that he was born in New Jersey and grew up in Ocean County. In 2001 he moved to Asbury Park and has lived there ever since. So the claim that Cullari is not a natural born citizen (which by the way is not a requirement for run for Congress anyway) is patently false.

Finally, and this was the only thing in the letter that really raised a red flag to me, it is alleged that Cullari is registered to vote outside the 6th district. This would be something the Little campaign could really strike at, and something the Cullari campaign would have to explain. Luckily I had Ernesto on the phone to do just that.

According to Cullari, it was a tradition in his family to vote together. As the “Kuya” of his family, which I have been informed means “elder,” it was Cullari’s responsibility to get all of his younger siblings and older family members out to the polls on election day. Although Cullari has lived in Asbury Park for the last decade, he maintained dual residency back home to maintain this tradition. Then he was asked to run for Congress:

I had to do the right thing when [the GOP] asked me to represented the place I have lived for ten years. I did not ask to run for Congress, people of the district came to me. It is an honor to do it and I am passionately taking up the fight.”

So after he was tapped to run for the GOP nomination in the 6th, Cullari dropped his dual residency in Ocean County and registered to vote at his Asbury Park address. So in a way, the letter is correct that Cullari has never voted in the 6th district. However, seeing as he was not personally seeking to run for Congress until he was asked to do so, he would have had no reason to either.

I should stress that nothing in this letter suggests that Little endorses its contents or the people who drafted it, which is a good thing for the party. In fact, I have not received any information showing that they even know it exists.

As we get closer to the June 5th primary, I hope these two camps continue to take the high road and avoid these types of attacks. This primary should be about who is the best conservative to take out Frank Pallone in 2012 and nothing else.
