Trump Nominates Neil Gorsuch to U.S. Supreme Court

President Donald Trump officially announced the nomination of Neil McGill Gorsuch (age 48) to the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday night, Save Jerseyans, as his choice to replace the late Antonin Scalia.

Gorsuch, a Harvard law graduate considered a conservative who strongly favors states’ rights, is presently a Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. When he was confirmed for that role? The U.S. Senate gave him their unanimous approval, something unlikely to happen this time around.

The Judge is considered adverse to abortion “rights” as well as attempts to infringe upon religious liberty; he authored a book criticizing attempts to create a basis for assisted suicide.

“Justice Scalia was a lion of the law,” Gorsuch declared in his remarks, adding that he “missed” the late conservative hero.

A former clerk for Justice Anthony Kennedy, Gorsuch is considered a texualist and originalist in the mold of Scalia when it comes to the all-important issue of constitutional interpretation.

In April 2016, Gorsuch delivered a speech at Case Western University in which he argued that all judges should attempt to “to apply the law as it is, focusing backward, not forward, and looking to text, structure, and history to decide what a reasonable reader at the time of the events in question would have understood the law to be — not to decide cases based on their own moral convictions or the policy consequences they believe might serve society best.”

Judge Gorsuch added on Tuesday night that he lacks patience for those jurists “[s]tretching for results he prefers rather than what the law demands.”
