NJ-02: Turkavage wins Cumberland; 5 GOP candidates have now won at least one county

NJ-02 keeps getting crazier by the minute, Save Jerseyans.

On Tuesday night, retired FBI Agent Robert Turkavage surprised many observers by capturing the support of Cumberland County’s Republican Party at its nominating convention.

Turkavage is the 5th GOP candidate (of eight) running in NJ-02 this year to win a county party’s formal support. You can check out our breakdown here but, in brief: Businessman Hirsh Singh has Ocean and Burlington in his corner, Somers Point Councilman James Toto was endorsed by Salem, Somers Point-based engineer Brian Fitzherbert is the official candidate in Gloucester, and former LD1 Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi won the line in Cape May.

This year’s unusual split nominating circuit result betrays an equally unusual level of disunity (or independence, depending upon your perspective) among the fractured South Jersey Republican establishment.

All eyes now turn to Atlantic County, which supplies the largest share of the district’s primary votes (approximately 1/3), which will convene a convention in Northfield and select its own candidate this Saturday March 24th

The June Primary’s ultimate victor will face presumptive Democrat nominee Jeff Van Drew in November for the right to succeed retiring GOP Congressman Frank LoBiondo.
