NJ-07: Torpey takes aim at Malinowski over campaign finance hypocrisy

FLEMINGTON, N.J. — A key ally of Congressman Leonard Lance is crying foul as primary day inches closer and Lance presumptive Democrat challenger’s statements come into conflict with reality.

On Wednesday, Hunterdon GOP Chairman Patrick Torpey laid into Tom Malinowski over his supporters fundraising for a corporation-funded.“ The problem, as Torpey sees it, is illustrated by the fact that Tom Malinowski had previously trumpeted an endorsement from a group called End Citizens United (ECU).

Said another way, Republicans say Malinowski is maintaining the appearance of clean hands while his allies do the dirty work for him.

“After a career as a Washington insider, Tom Malinowski fails to see the hypocrisy of bragging about his refusal to take corporate PAC contributions, while his allies have been raising hundreds of thousands of dollars directly from corporations.”

A new twist: on Tuesday, Politico reported that the Federal Election Commission (FEC) faces a watchdog lawsuit stemming from an anonymous $1 million contribution made to the “Coalition for Progress,” a Super PAC which Torpey reports is raising cash to back Democrat candidates in NJ-07 and NJ-11.

“With no connection to the values of CD 7 constituents, Mr. Malinowski was raised in Princeton and spent more than 20 years in Washington as a lobbyist and in a variety of politically connected taxpayer funded jobs – resume attached) it should be no surprise he fails to even realize he is speaking out of both sides of his mouth,” Torpey continued. “There is no problem with accepting legal contributions from corporate PACs, but Malinowski can’t have it both ways.  Either he stands by his refusal to receive help from corporations and should publicly rebuke their support or he needs to admit to benefiting from corporate giving and stop deceiving the voters of the 7th District.”
