GOP Congressman urges Trump to reconsider tariffs in light of excellent jobs report

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 3.85% last month as non-farm payrolls rose (seasonally adjusted) by a whopping 223,000.

That’s the lowest its been in half of a century; the regular unemployment rate has only been this low one other time since then, in April 2000.

U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R, NJ-07) was among those celebrating the news but with a word of caution for the jubilant Trump Administration.

“Today’s economic report is good news for the United States, job seekers and the federal coffers.  Wages have increased and unemployment rates are the lowest in decades,” said Lance in a statement. “All this success could be undermined by the imposition of new tariffs on aluminum and steel imports. I urge the Trump Administration to reconsider its decision in light of today’s excellent employment report.  Let’s keep the economy going strong.”

Parting with the President isn’t a new tack for Lance who has opposed Trump on issues ranging from tax reform to overhauling health care.

Tariffs have remained a hot global topic this spring as the Trump Administration doubles down on its use of trade tariffs in hard-nosed trade negotiations with foreign trading partners including Mexico and Canada.
