BOOK REVIEW: “What Money Can’t Buy” is a Long List of Complaints

Michael Sandel, author of What Money Can’ Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, is a professor of political philosophy at Harvard University who has written a long list of complaints about contemporary life as well as the costly legal (and illegal) activities that irritate him.

This ad hominem litany, oops! I mean book, railing against modernity is so inoffensive and filled with painfully common sense (and obvious) observations that none, left or right, will be able to find anything they object to while reading it.

But where’s the fun in that, Save Jerseyans?

With the turn of the last page, one realizes how the last few hours could have been better spent fasting or walking the Via Dolorosa instead of reading mundane and transparently moralizing assertions including, but by no means limited to:

A. Skipping lines for money isn’t fair (debatable);

B. Paying for organs from political prisoners without their consent is wrong (clearly);

C. The life insurance market is tantamount to gambling (true) and thus demeaning (rubbish);

D. That municipalities shouldn’t save taxpayer money by opening up public spaces to corporate sponsorship (total rubbish);

E. That opening up carpool lanes to non-carpoolers for money is immoral (rubbish); and

D. That incentivizing  competition waters down education (more rubbish).

It goes on, and on, and on.

The list of market innovations Sandel bemoans is seemingly never-ending but, interestingly, he leaves out an underlying moral philosophy explaining why markets are allegedly’s the enemy of a civil society. Markets can and do separate people of different socioeconomic levels as in this example of the Skyboxes at sporting arenas; however, he ignores the fact that the “civic” society of ancient Rome ensured that plebians and patricians were kept separate even when the plebian merchants and craftsman were often richer than the patricians. He also strangely ignores the fact that market innovations may allow the cost of government, goods, and services to be paid for by those with more wealth instead of being socialized for everyone to pay for and, having done so, spread the burden to those ill-equipped to shoulder it.

At the end of the day, Save Jerseyans, Mr. Sandel’s nostalgia for a time long past will be welcomed by many revanchist right wingers and utopian OWS-types. On the other hand, those of us who cherish markets, efficiency, and our own time… well, let’s just say we could get together and compile a much better list of real complaints!
