REPORT: Lonegan is behind new attempt to beat Trump in Cleveland

While Governor Chris Christie remains one of Donald Trump‘s key backers, another relatively well-known New Jersey Republican is reportedly behind a fresh last-ditch effort to dislodge the presumptive GOP nominee at the upcoming July convention in Cleveland.

Steven Lonegan, a former candidate for Governor and U.S. Senate as well as an ex-mayor and conservative activist, is part of a coalition seeking the implementation of a “conscience clause” permitting convention delegates, as the name suggestions, to vote their conscience.

Lonegan participated in a Thursday night conference call reportedly intended to unite “pockets of resistance” comprised of Cruz, Kasich and Rubio supporters.

“I’ve woken up every day struggling to accept that he’s going to be our candidate,” Lonegan told The Washington Post. “He’s spent more time talking about getting Bernie Sanders voters to vote for him than conservatives. What do you think he has that Bernie Sanders’s supporters would like? A secret socialist agenda?”
