Newly-minted Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy was on the scene this weekend with Phil Murphy and Tom Kean Jr. to inspect the aftermath of the appearance of the I-80 sinkholes.
“I’m on the scene of the I-80 sinkholes with @GovMurphy and @CongressmanKean. The entire interstate is shut down here,” Duffy tweeted on X. “State troopers say they’ve never seen anything like this. @NewJerseyDOT is taking the lead, but @USDOT is here to partner with them and provide critical assistance to get this economic artery back up and running. This is not political, it’s about making sure the American people are taken care of.”
“The impact of the I-80 closure has been very serious; commuters having 2+ hours tacked onto their trip, main street small businesses that cannot reach their customers, and miles long traffic gridlock in small downtowns,” added Congressman Kean. “We are working together at all levels of government to get this fixed. And we will not rest until the job is done.”
State officials estimate a 6-to-8 week for evaluation and repairs.
Thank you very much @SecDuffy for visiting the scene of the I-80 sinkholes in Wharton this morning.
