N.J. school district may adopt 33% tax hike

We warned you just last week that a property tax armageddon was right around the corner, Save Jerseyans. And sure enough, it’s already underway.

Tonight (Tuesday), the Little Egg Harbor School District (Ocean County) will consider a 33% school tax increase. Not 3%… 33%! The School Board adtoped a preliminary proposal earlier in April for the 1,700-student strong pre-K through Grade 6 district. In real numbers, that’s an average increase of $600+ annually per property taxpaying household.

The school funding formula imposed by the state bears most of the blame; the Murphy Administration wants Egg Harbor to kick in $24 million towards the school district’s budget to compliment state aid, but without raising the school tax, officials say they can only cough up $14 million.

“Little Harbor, along with many other school districts across the state, are ready to fall off this fiscal cliff,” explained Little Egg Harbor Superintendent Lisa Antunes at the April 15th board meeting.

You can expect to hear more news like this ahead; the Murphy Administration recently sent notices to 281 of New Jersey’s 590 districts advising them that they could exceed the 2% cap to meet their imposed obligations.

The average New Jersey property tax bill exceeded $10,000 for the first time in 2024.
