A new bill (S3850/A5356) could push the boundaries for electioneering outside polling stations from 100 feet to 200 feet, Save Jerseyans.
What if you show up to pay your taxes during early voting and someone notices your “Trump for President” bumper sticker in the parking lot? Located 150 feet from the entrance?
“This bill grants county boards of elections the discretion to extend the distance prohibiting electioneering to be within 200 feet of the outside entrance to any polling place or room, or of a ballot drop box in use during the conduct of an election within the county,” according to the official bill statement. “The bill requires county boards of elections to place a clear and conspicuous notice of the prohibition outside the polling place or room or ballot drop box prior to placing the prohibition into effect, including the penalties for any violation of the prohibition.”
Violations of this legislation could theoretically subject you to CRIMINAL penalties, and one legislator thinks that’s insane.
“If the goal is fairness and clarity, this ain’t it,” said Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia (R-24). “There should be more focus on who’s going in to vote and showing voter ID with a picture, then worrying who’s in the parking lot with a MAGA sticker on their car, or a fight the oligarchy, patriarchy, or whatever archy you people are fighting for.”
