New Jersey’s House delegation cast party-line votes on Thursday to pass the “Big Beautiful Bill” through the U.S. House of Representatives. The Trump tax bill includes a slew of tax relief measures including a significant $20,000 bump in the State and Local Tax (SALT) cap.
The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) had created a SALT cap of $10,000 for tax years 2018 through this year (2025).
Among those Democrats who voted ‘no’ was Mikie Sherrill of NJ-11, the frontrunner for the Democrat gubernatorial nomination:

Are voters likely to look at a $20,000 bump in the cap (when the average property tax bill is $10,000) as no big deal? Unlikely.
So why didn’t Sherrill suck it up and break ranks?
My best guess: If she thought June 10th was all wrapped up? She would’ve voted for the Big Beautiful Bill to stunt an inevitable SALT attack line.
Maybe she doesn’t believe her own internals?
.@MikieSherrill just voted against giving significant tax relief to the vast majority of New Jerseyans – relief they desperately need thanks to Democrats making NJ the highest taxed state in America. Why? Because her top priority as governor isn’t NJ taxpayers, it’s proving how… https://t.co/5nWweKQpQE
