Bill A4844 emerged from committee this week, Save Jerseyans, and it’s amazingly designed (in actuality, if not in intent?) to drive your electric bill even higher.
“This bill furthers the extreme goals of the Governor’s Energy Master Plan by encouraging the conversion or replacement of various systems and devices powered by fossil fuels, including natural gas, with those powered by electricity. These include space and water heating systems, appliances, and industrial equipment. It directs the BPU to create a cost recovery and performance incentive mechanism,” explains the minority statement released on Monday. “In this committee’s most recent joint hearing, we heard about the enormous scope of residential electrification in this State, and what it would mean. Out of about 3.5 million households in New Jersey, approximately 75 percent are powered by natural gas, meaning the goal is to convert more than 2.6 million homes to electrical power.”
The end result, translated: a massive increase in energy costs.
Assemblyman Paul Kanitra (R-Ocean County) gave a standout performance during the Telecommunications & Utilities Committee hearing, slamming what the freshman legislator described as an “incomprehensible” piece of legislation. It’s also a piece of something else in his estimation.
“Everyone in this room knows it’s a hot piece of garbage. I’m doing you a favor by telling you to vote no,” said Kanitra, citing the opinion of the Division of Rate Counsel which has warned of cost increases.
New Jersey electric bills are already set to spike between 17% and 20% beginning on June 1st thanks to the Murphy Administration’s disastrous policies.
