Activists decry bipartisan N.J. offshore wind industry bailout bill

Here we go again??

Bipartisian legislation which would donate $100 million in tax dollars to “green” energy projects – code for offshore wind – is poised for a big vote on Monday.

While the state purposes of the bill (A5687) is tax incentives for manufacturers, the legislation’s new $100 million giveaway would bring the state’s grand total wasted on the failed offshore wind industry to around $600 million.

“This is clearly an effort by offshore wind interests to grab even more taxpayer money in an attempt to restart the industrialization of our oceans,” said Robin Shaffer, the president and leader of Protect Our Coast – NJ. “Proponents point out that the tax credits could be used for nuclear energy projects, but does anyone seriously believe that the same people in Trenton who have fought nuclear power for years are suddenly going to support it with tax incentives?”

“Offshore wind is an America-last industry,” added Shaffer. “Giant foreign corporations are handed millions in taxpayer dollars to defile our coastal environment and ship their profits back to Europe. No one in Trenton should support another penny for this—let alone $100 million. We’re calling on our legislators to either amend the bill to remove this reckless provision or vote it down entirely. If you claim to stand against offshore wind, this is your chance to prove it—protect New Jersey taxpayers, our coastal environment, and our tourism and fishing industries.”

Governor Murphy recently declared that his administration is not giving up on offshore wind despite high profile recent setbacks including President Trump’s executive action effectively dooming two major projects off of the Jersey Shore’s coastline.

It’s expected that the legislation will receive a vote on June 30, 2025 which is also the state budget deadline.
