UPDATE: Sherrill’s refusal to disown Mamdani is causing Democrats down-ballot issues

Mikie Sherrill doubled-down on her support of communist anti-Semite Zohran Mamdani at the end of last week on network television (see below), and it’s becoming a liability for her down-ballot running mates.

Republican Assembly Candidates Andrew Wardell and Jessica Ford laid into Assembly incumbents Margie Donlon and Luanne Peterpaul of the 11th Legislative District (in Monmouth County), calling on the Democrats to take Sherrill to task over her endorsement in the New York mayoral contest.

“I find it deeply disturbing and outrageous that Assemblywomen Donlon and Peterpaul would stand by silently as their party’s gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill endorses an openly anti-Semitic socialist who wants to defund the police,” said Wardell, a former Neputne City mayor. “I can promise our future constituents that unlike their current representatives, they will NEVER have to wonder where Andrew Wardell and Jessica Ford stand on an issue, and that we will ALWAYS have their backs.”

“It’s not too late for Donlon and Peterpaul to do the right thing and denounce Mike Sherrill’s heinous endorsement of Mamdani, whose dangerous, anti-law enforcement views pose a threat to the entire New York Metropolitan area, including to the thousands of Monmouth County residents who commute to New York City for work,” added Ford, a veteran of the small business development industry. “Donlon and Peterpaul’s silence can be taken only one way: they support and agree with Sherrill’s endorsement of Mamdani and his radical views.”

The entire General Assembly is on the ballot this fall.

LD11, home to Asbury Park, remains one of the most competitive districts heading into Election 2025 at least on paper. The district has switched control in each of the last two election cycles (Republicans took control in 2021 and then Democrats clawed back the seats in 2023). Ciattarelli won the district by two points in 2021, and Kamala Harris carried it by three points in 2024.

State Senator Vin Gopal, a Democrat reelected by 20 points in 2023 after outspending his opponent 10 to 1, is not on the ballot this year like back in 2021 when the GOP challengers won by only a few hundred votes.
