N.J. Democrats’ voter registration edge shrunk by another 3,029 in August

The trend remains positive for the Grand Old Party, Save Jerseyans.

We have newly released data showing approximately 7,000 newly registered New Jersey voters in August 2025. The Republican net gain (985) is a contrast to the Democrats net loss of 2,044. Overall, that translates to a further 3,029 reduction of the Democrats’ still formidable statewide registration edge.

The vast majority of newly-registered voters (8,121) were unaffiliated. That’s little comfort for Mikie Sherrill since recent polling suggests independent/unaffiliated voters are leaning towards the Republican candidate, Jack Ciattarelli.

There are still 2,529,708 registered Democrats to the GOP’s 1,667,912 in the Garden State, but that 861,796 deficit is down considerably from the Democrats 1.1+ million edge back in 2021 and closer to the approximately 700,000 advantage Democrats enjoyed in 2009 when Chris Christie defeated Jon Corzine.

While the gubernatorial race is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, the registration shift could have a major impact down-ballot.

For example, in battleground LD8 where Democrats are trying to hold onto a freshman Democrat Assembly seat, the Democrats netted 2 new registrants in August to the Republicans’ 104. Democrats only flipped Andrea Katz’s current seat by 252 votes in 2023.

Nationally, Democrats are losing voter registration in every state that tracks partisan affiliation while the Republican Party continues to gain.
