VIDEO: Van Drew holds subcommittee hearing on crime in Charlotte, N.C.

Congressman Jeff Van Drew chaired a House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight field hearing on Monday from Charlotte, North Carolina, site of a shocking late summer light rail murder which shocked the country.

“We came to Charlotte because the people deserve answers,” said Van Drew (R, NJ-02). “A 14-time repeat offender was let go over and over, and because of it, a young woman lost her life. It is unacceptable. Iryna Zarutska should still be alive, and so should countless other innocent Americans. Instead of standing with victims, Democrats keep defending the very policies that are destroying our cities. Enough is enough. As Chairman of this Subcommittee, I will continue to make sure that victims’ voices are heard and that the truth about these failed policies is put on the record.”

Van Drew had a particularly stomach-churning exchange with Mia Alderman. Her granddauther – Mary Santina Collins — was stabbed 133 times and laid wrapping plastic for eight days until she was discovered.

“[Democrats] are saying everything’s good, crime’s down to record lows, no problems. You live in Charlotte. Is that your perception?” inquired Van Drew.
