If you’re still missing plastic bags, Save Jerseyans, then you haven’t seen anything yet!
A bill (S2195) actively working its way through the state legislature would BAR New Jersey restaurants from supplying single-use utensils to customers in most circumstances without an explicit request. Eating establishments would need to provide reusable utensils for anyone not taking out their food, and a similar scheme would apply to condiments.
Schools and hospitals would be exempt. Just about every other establishment – including food trucks and sports venues – would need to comply.
Fines could reach as high as $2,500 for repeat offenders.
New Jersey banned single-used plastic bags, paper bags, and plastic straws back in May 2022; a subsequent study found an increase in plastic consumption.
