The shell games have already begun, Save Jerseyans.
Governor Mikie Sherrill kicked off her administration last week by signing six executive orders, one of which was allegedly Sherrill making good on her campaign promise to “freeze” our electric bills. Specifically, “[t]his executive order uses state authority to offset upcoming rate increases due to the regional grid operator PJM’s mismanagement and hold utilities accountable for keeping rates from continuing to climb at an unsustainable rate.”
Sounds nice?
Not really. At least not once you read the damn thing.
What EO-1 effectively accomplished is taking Clean Energy Fund money and RGGI surcharges – already present your bill – and repurposing some of those funds as “Residential Universal Bill Credits.” Sherrill is robbing Peter to pay Paul. In this case, YOU are Peter and Paul, Save Jerseyans!
Our friend Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia (R-24) explained it best: “1. Raise your rates 2. Collect the money 3. Hand a fraction back 4. Hold a press conference 5. Pretend they saved you $.”
