Webber loses key posts after challenging Assembly GOP caucus leadership

The smallest GOP caucus since the aftermath of Watergate also appears to be grappling with some internal turmoil at the moment, Save Jerseyans, aside from the obvious adjustment to the realities associated with a veto-proof Democrat majority.

On Friday, New Jersey Globe was first to report that long-time Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-26) has been removed by the Republican leadership from his seat on Financial Institutions & Insurance Committee as well as his Republican Appropriations Officer Appropriations Committee position (but will retain his general membership seat on the committee).

The most public antecedent: Webber demanded (but wasn’t granted) the opportunity for a debate on the GOP Assembly leadership slate following Election 2025’s historic losses.

According to Save Jersey source with knowledge of the sequence of events, Assemblyman Webber was informed about a week ago about the decision.

Webber is one of the legislature’s most consistently conservative votes and is a former NJGOP chairman. Last fall, Republicans lost 5 Assembly seats and fell from 28 seats to just 23 in the 80-seat chamber amid the suprise statewide wipeout of the GOP ticket…
