Op-Ed: Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

By Greg Myhre

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So it’s great to see Senator Cory Booker agreeing with me that married couples should not be taxed on their first $75,000 of income.

This week, Senator Booker proposed eliminating federal income tax for married couples earning up to $75,000.

Sound familiar? It should.

That’s the same threshold in my bill, A1850, which exempts the first $75,000 for married couples — and $37,500 for individuals — before applying a simple 5.9% flat income tax.

This plan would deliver real tax relief for hardworking New Jersey families.

My bill would provide:

✅ No tax on the first $75,000 for married couples ($37,500 for individuals)
✅ A 5.9% flat income tax on income above that threshold
✅ Savings for nearly everyone
✅ A tax code that is simple, flat, and easy to understand

Whether it’s at the state level or the federal level, the goal is the same:

Put more money back in the pockets of the people who keep our economy moving.

So here’s my offer to the Senator:

Help me convince Governor Sherrill to sign A1850 into law here in Trenton, I’ll stand right beside you to lobby President Trump to pass your federal proposal in Washington.
