David Wildstein will finally be sentenced today, Save Jerseyans, but the admitted “mastermind” of the Bridgegate scandal is unlikely to see the inside of a jail cell.
“Put simply, were it not for Wildstein’s decision to cooperate and disclose the true nature of the lane reductions, there likely would have been no prosecutions related to the bridge scheme,” federal prosecutors argued in a pre-sentencing hearing court filing.
They want probation but no prison time.
Co-conspirators former Christie Administration official Bridget Kelly and former State Senator Bill Baroni didn’t fare so well; they were sentenced to 1-1/2 and two years in federal prison, respectively, though their appeals are still ongoing.
Consequently, many observers in and around the New Jersey political sphere are alleging a disconnect in the application of justice.
“For the better part of the past two years I’ve kept my personal opinion on this issue to myself but how in the hell does Bridget Kelly, a mother of 4, get a recommendation of over a year in federal prison while the confessed mastermind, the person who literally set up those around him to take the fall, may get a pass?” opined Asw. Holly Schepisi (R-39) after the state’s position became public.
