TRENTON, N.J. – 72 babies is a lot of human life.
It’s the number of children as of June 2019 saved by New Jersey’s Safe Haven Infant Protection Act since it took effect back in 2000.

“The Safe Haven law is effective at preventing tragedy and I urge the governor to sign the bill,” said Assemblyman Anthony Bucco (R-25). “Last month’s newborn makes 72 babies saved. When people know about the law, they are equipped with the information to make the right decision.”
New Jersey parents can leave a newborn at a hospital, EMT headquarters, police or fire station station without any legal repercussions up to 30 days after the child is born.
Some Trenton legislators think the state can do more.
Assemblyman Bucco (S1126/A1380) is sponsoring a bill which would mandate instruction in the Safe Haven Law for all high school students.
“Safe Haven Infant Protection already has protected many precious newborns, and this bill should save even more infant lives,” explained Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-26), one of the bill’s sponsors along with Democrat Speaker Craig Coughlin. “With this law, we make sure New Jersey remains a leader in offering compassionate outlets for parents in crisis.”
There aren’t any reliable statistics for how many babies are abandoned every year in the United States..
