Top Senate Democrat kills self-serve N.J. gas

You won’t need to pump your own gas in New Jersey anytime soon, Save Jerseyans.

On Monday, Democrat Senate President Nicholas Scutari killed a bipartisan legislative effort to legalize self-serve gasoline in the Garden State.

Advocates of self-serve believed the time was ripe for change in light of record prices. The legislature’s leading Democrat doesn’t agree.

“There is no data supporting any contention that moving to a self-service model would save residents money at the pump,” Scutari explained to the NJ Monitor. Scutari also cited polling data suggesting New Jersey motorists remain opposed to self-serve pumps.

New Jersey will remain – for now at least – the last state in the union to outlaw self-service.
